    Summary

On a dubious autopilot, Viktor twists the cane end towards himself and takes the shirt into his hand.

It’s wet, obviously. Sweat drenched and crumpled in Viktor’s grasp.

Viktor looks over to the bathroom door. The stream of water is a soft background noise to Viktor’s strangely loud breath.

Viktor knows what Jayce smells like. Their friendship is a highly physical affair. They’re close. Viktor catalogues, cherishes, and obsesses over every touch they share.

But there are lines. Some so basic, rooted in human decency and common sense, that they don’t need to be verbalized.

Viktor is about to cross a good dozen of those.

    Summary

“Nothing to be ashamed of,” the old woman says when he’s gone, patting Viktor’s shoulder. “Plenty of men damaged in the war.”

Viktor looks at Jayce through the sunny haze of the market: his sweet man, suffering, lopsided, white-knuckling the grip of his cane. The traces of silver shining in his hair.

“Yes,” Viktor says faintly. “He was, ah. Damaged in the war.”

    Summary

It's 1997. God is real, and He is in your cereal, your radio, the glint of headlights caught in roadkill eyes. In the hum of cicadas and the low pulse of FM static. He is in the rust on your daddy's tools, the warm plastic of the truck dashboard, the syrup-thick silence that settles over the hills come sundown. If you're listening proper, you can hear Him in the drip of the kitchen tap, the way it ticks time like a metronome. Keeps beat for the loneliness.

Jayce Talis lives alone in the hills, content to keep to himself, his Bible, and the quiet work of tending land too stubborn to yield much. Then one summer evening, the church drops a half-starved stranger on his porch. Viktor- sharp-tongued, bird-boned and unrepentant- is the kind of man Jayce was raised to turn away from. But the mountains have a way of stretching out time and making space for things that don’t belong, and the more Viktor learns to live, the more he makes Jayce remember what he's spent years trying to forget.

    Summary

When things are especially bad and he sits there just staring into the dark for hours on end, he imagines himself splitting Viktor’s head open, just to see what’s in there. He knows - of course he does, on a clinical level. Yet, he finds himself imagining his hands deep in Viktor’s skull, proding, rummaging the matter there, the slippery wetness of it, cupping his hands to bring the fluids there to his mouth and drink, and he feels his own brain go drunk with it. Feels his teeth itch with it.

And some of those times, it’s completely unrelated, he swears, that he ends up in the shower holding himself just a bit too tight and being just a bit too rough with himself as he leans against the warming tiles, breathing heavily through his nose.

    ---

Or - Jayce is stressed and overworked and doesn't know what to do with his need for Viktor.

    Summary

“Do you honestly expect me to stand guard outside your door while you take your Queen to bed—our bed—and have them in the ways in which I would have you?”

    Something in Viktor broke.

“Yes!” he snapped, louder than he intended. His voice cracked, edged with grief, with exhaustion. “Yes, I expect you to fulfil your duty, as I must fulfil mine. Because that is what is demanded of us!”

    “Fuck duty,” Jayce growled.

When King Viktor agrees to consider marriage and propagate the line of succession, Jayce, his Kingsguard and sworn shield, does not take kindly to the news.
