“You used to show up all the time,” the woman said. Her voice was rough. Strained. Quiet, but in a way that made the hairs on the back of Emmett’s neck stand on end. “Making a scene. Talking about how everything was wrong. How the world was broken.”
She staggered forward and clutched at the shoulders of his jumpsuit with both hands, pinning him against the wall. Her breath was hot on his face and reeked of alcohol. And suddenly, as he stared into her narrowed eyes and felt a thirty-year-old memory click ponderously into place, Emmett recognized her.

When he first read of Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope’s dinosaur feud, Emmett had scoffed. Ugly competition should not have a place in science. Even before he learned of the money being carelessly distributed to any bandit who managed to find trace of a dinosaur, he had read those articles with distaste sitting sour on his tongue.
Tannen hadn’t exactly kept the terms of his employment with Cope quiet. Money for fossils. Money for dinosaur fossils. If he were to see the bones hidden beneath that canvas, with Emmett in the way… Well. Tannen was not one to allow an obstacle to remain between him and a payday if a well-placed bullet could change that.
Or: Doctor Emmett Brown is a palaeontologist on the verge of the discovery of a lifetime. It's only natural he be worried by the stranger at his dig site.

Personally, I take great comfort in the insignificance of my existence within the unfathomable scale of the universe.” He leaned on the workbench, bringing his head down level with Marty’s eyeline. “You know, in the grand scheme of things, every single living creature on earth is infinitesimally small. On a cosmic scale you and I are essentially of a size. Isn’t that interesting?”

When Doc Brown realises there's something living in his lab, he thinks he has an unusually smart rat. To his amazement, he finds himself with a four-inch tall teenager on his hands - a teenager who is lost, and alone, and a long way away from home.

But unless the ripple effect kicks in soon, there may be dire consequences for the space-time continuum.

His other self claps a hand, hard, over his mouth. His palm is damp. Clammy. Emmett makes a protesting sound against it but before he can wriggle free, the other him speaks.

It was done, he told himself. Whatever change had occurred in the timeline, it was already in the past, irreversible as any other event. And after all, he’d known Marty for only a week. It was irrational to think of him as a friend. It was wildly irrational, to mourn something that had never existed.
After hearing about the birth of the McFly family's second daughter, Doc Brown can only conclude that the worst has happened and that Marty has somehow been erased from time. He resigns himself to being alone, but when he crosses paths with the new McFly kid he can't help but make a friend.
