And for a second he can hear the door sing and it’s so jarring and nonsensical and, seemingly out of nothing, from it spills a man. Weak and shaky and holding onto the neon frame like he’s holding onto his damn dear life.
“Can anyone tell me what year it is?” The man asks and then immediately collapses. The door closes behind him and then it’s just. Gone. Like it had never been there in the first place. Maybe it hadn’t.
Tim shakes his head as if shaking off the door’s existence and then immediately exclaims in horror “is that Jon!?”
Jon scoffs. “Well, Tim, seeing how I’m literally right here—”

Martin gathers blankets and pillows, the softest he can find; he arranges them on his couch as if making a nest and he doesn’t think about the small warm shape Jon’s body will leave behind him when he wakes, and he doesn’t think of Jon’s hair spread over cool white cotton like seaweed on an empty beach.

The thing is, Jonathan Sims is someone you’d call the police on if you saw him hanging around a school, those frazzled clothes and bags under his eyes, the frantic muttering and thousand-year stare.
Yet there he sits, headteacher of The Magnus Institute for Gifted Young Minds.
The name’s a bit misleading, it is. They’re in a bad part of town. The parents are either terrible or absent, and the kids—
“They’re monsters,” his new and handsome coworker grins, when Martin’s signature on his contract is barely dry. “Absolute monsters. Get too close and you’ll lose some fingers. Or maybe your mind.”
“They’re babies,” is all Martin can feebly manage, in reply, and Tim’s eyes narrow at the fondness in his voice.

Everybody is excited when Martin finally gets himself a date - everybody, except for Jon, who can not quite justify his apprehension over Martin's upcoming night out. Maybe it's just that he worries about his worst employee's work perfomance.
He tries to be supportive, regardless.
But still, shenanigans ensue.But it didn’t, not to Jon, at least. He simply couldn’t phantom what was the man's problem with kind, patient, attentive Martin who, even now, amidst the ruins of a promised date, was altogether too selfless to get properly angry with his pathetic excuse of a boss.

‘Why are you apologising?’ Martin asked in disbelief.
