Adaine leans against the brick exterior of Oakshield Middle, backpack clutched in one hand, her crystal in the other. Goosebumps prick uncomfortably along her bare arms and legs. She’d only been in her pajamas when she’d gotten into a screaming match with her father, and she hadn’t had time to do anything other than shove shoes onto her bare feet and grab her school backpack from the shelf by the door before she ran outside, the door slamming shut behind her.
The familiar drone of the Hangman’s engine pulls her back into her senses, and she lets out a long breath of relief when she spots Fabian rounding the corner on the bike.
