Summary
Steve is in a bit of a crisis. Everyone around him is moving forward with their lives, they have moved out, met new people, and he is still in Hawkins, going on date after date and looking for a connection that he just can't find. After one too many dreams about a dead boy he takes his truck and RV and hits the road, trying to run away from ghosts and expectations.
He never planned for his truck to break down in the middle of nowhere, Pennsylvania.

Something wet hits his shoulder.
Outside the enclosure, a child points at him and laughs.
"Wonderful," Steve mumbles, staring at the bird shit now decorating his sleeve.
"Oh, you got a little something…" Eddie reaches out towards Steve's hair, then pulls his hand back. "Well. Everywhere, really."

Steve works in the farmyard section of Hawkins Zoo, and spends his days mucking out barns and trying not to fall in love with his co-worker in the Insect House.

Steve throws a dejected look at the clock. 9:25pm. Saturdays are usually the busiest night of the week, and Steve actually enjoys working the closing shift. People tend to be in a better mood when they're choosing their weekend entertainment than at 9am on a Monday when they're returning something that their five year old kid should definitely not have watched and they're trying to blame Steve for it even though they specifically picked something from the Adult Horror section (looking at you, Mr Edmonton.)
Not tonight, though. Tonight, Corroded Coffin is in Hawkins giving a concert and suddenly everyone in town is a metal fan.

“Truth,” she says, calm as ever.
“Boring,” he drags out, though his eyes narrow just slightly, like he’s already making something up. “Fine, then. Let’s make this interesting, shall we?”
Eddie gets that wicked, mischievous look whenever he’s about to say something unhinged, something he knows he shouldn’t.
And then he moves his gaze past Robin, across Jonathan, until it finally lands on Steve. He grins.
“Okay, Nance,” Eddie says, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees. “Confirm or deny something for me real quick.”

Eddie had Poppy and every time he looked at her tiny little face, all he could think was how unworthy he felt.
But Steve—Steve was fucking built for this shit. He held Poppy in his strong arms so gently and he bottle fed her, changed her diaper, played her classical music, talked to her like she was a fully grown adult because he’d read somewhere that it would help with a kid’s development.
Eddie wasn’t cut out for being a father, much less a single father. But he never was a single father, not really. Not with Steve. Steve was always there. Self-assured, offering to look after little seedling and forcing Eddie to go hop in the shower, eat something, take care of himself in a way he hadn’t known how to do in those first few endless weeks.
And Eddie thought that maybe—

‘Walk quietly.’ She mouths. He obeys, keeping his boots as quiet as he can on the linoleum floor. He gets to the doorway and finds what she’s gawking at.

Watching Steve sit alone that first day- even with his ex and her new squeeze crowding his table- former King of Hawkins High with his bruised up face and puppy dog eyes, and apparently, knight in shining armor tendencies, Eddie never stood a chance.
It's Jeff, in the end, that finally badgers Eddie enough to let Steve be dragged over to their table- into Hellfire, and Dungeons & Dragons, and hopefully right into Eddie's arms- after Steve intervenes to stop Jeff being harrassed in the halls.

Adonis says something. Byers turns the camera and beckons him over, and then they’re both leaning over the display, faces so close their cheeks almost touch. Byers points at something and Adonis huffs a laugh - a short, near-silent thing that makes Byers’s fringe move.
“Hold that for me,” Eddie says and gives Gareth his cigarette.
