    Stan was looking at Kyle like he’d never seen him before. Like he was different than he’d thought. A smile overtakes his face–the biggest smile he’d ever seen Stan wear.

    Then, Stan leans forward, brushing Kyle’s bangs back, and bumps their foreheads together. Thump. Kyle can hear Kenny laughing and Cartman cursing, but not really.

    Because Stan is so close he can feel his breath in warm puffs on his lips, and it should be gross but it’s not. Stan’s eyes are crinkled up and twinkling, and Kyle can’t think of anything else.

    Or: Kyle and Stan grow up together, sharing skinned knees and beds and firsts, and Kyle bites his tongue.

    “Do you wanna tell me why you're stressed or do you not wanna talk about it?” Stan asks. Kyle screws his face up like he’s going to snarl something smart, but bites down on his bottom lip instead, rubbing at his reddened right eye and shrugging. 

    “You’ll just think I’m being stupid and dramatic,” he says.

    Stan shrugs and tries for wry wit. 

    “Stupid? Never. Dramatic? Maybe.”

    Kyle’s eyes narrow in a poisonous expression, the kind that would make a lesser man wilt. Wrong choice of words, definitely wrong choice of words.

    Kyle is upset. Stan tries to comfort him in the best ways he knows how.
