Summary
Nile’s eyes are darting between them both, obviously thrown off by the open aggression, and Joe sighs. This is not the first impression he would have liked to make. Across from him, Nicky’s mouth is pressed into a thin line. “I’m sorry, Nile,” Joe says. “Nicky and I had a complicated beginning, and now we find it too easy to slip into arguments.”
Nicky closes his eyes and breathes in deeply through his nose. “Yes,” he says. “Things often become more heated between us than we mean them to.”
Or: Joe decided to forge his own path in 1102, and it takes the events at Merrick Pharmaceuticals to shake up the status quo.

Summary
Over the next few months, Joe runs into Nicky every so often at the farmer’s market. Some weekends Nicky doesn’t make it, because of his work schedule - Joe doesn’t understand it because he doesn’t ask, though he does start to recognize when one of those missing weekends is coming up because Nicky will stock up on things with longer shelf-life. When they do run into each other, they make small talk and move through the stalls together.
Joe doesn’t mention it to Lykon when he stops by, because it is kind of weird, that Lykon’s ex-boyfriend texts Joe things like - If you’re here, the apples look particularly good this week and thank you for that recipe, I did not know what I was going to do with that much couscous
Or,
Joe wouldn't usually consider starting anything with his best friend's ex, but as long as they keep it casual, it shouldn't be weird... right?

Summary
In truth this is but the latest bad day in a series of terrible ones: four days ago Yusuf was kidnapped and tied up and slung over the back of a horse, and the days since he has spent with a bag over his head as that horse carried him further and further away from his home. That was insulting enough, but being trussed up and left propped against the trunk of a tree without even a guard to stand over him is a new low.
At least these bandits haven’t tried to slit his throat, and seem more interested in kidnapping than actual bodily harm. But flopping around trying to find something to cut his bonds with is a particular flavor of humiliation he never wishes to experience again, especially when he hears people coming back to the camp, and the only thing Yusuf can do to preserve his dignity is to flip onto his back.

“Not everywhere,” Nicky said. Joe stretched his hand out over the space between their beds, and Nicky took it and laced their fingers together. “Cities are safer, but there is still danger.”
Joe sighed. Nicky had rubbed his thumb over Joe’s knuckles and wished that Joe had not suffered for so long only to be reborn into a world that was still steeped in prejudice, in the same intolerance and hatred that caused all his pain. “I would like to dance with you like that one day,” Joe told him, and Nicky had to press a kiss to their tangled fingers.

Summary
“Yusuf?” Nicky breathes, and the man fires a blast into his chest.
Nile winces - it’s gory, messy, he’ll be down for awhile - before his words catch up to her, and she whips her head around to stare at the man holding a gun on her family.
She does recognize him, she realizes with a sinking feeling. She thought she’d just hadn’t had a dream about him in awhile, but she never made the connection between a man going about his mundane business in a store with the screaming one trapped under the ocean that had been haunting her. She just thought he was a random face plucked from her memories.

Summary
It is no more filthy or grim than others they have been held in over the centuries, but this cell feels different. Chains are thicker now, walls are stronger. There are more guns, they fire faster if not more accurately. And the crushing weight of the ocean hangs over their heads. Yusuf closes his eyes, tries to calm himself with the sound of Nicolo breathing, the feel of his bony ankle against his own calf. Nicolo still doesn’t speak, but after a time he begins to hum - calm, soothing things he knows Yusuf likes.

They've been inseparable for centuries but never quite managed to say they're in love.

“Don’t -” Nicolo begins, but has no idea what should come next. He has no idea what he needs the man not to do. He only knows what he wants the man to do, and that is to lay hands upon him again. Nicolo has the sudden, mad urge to drop the knife, close the distance between them in the hopes that he might be killed a second time.

Crowley freezes, a finger still on the key, prepared to slide it a few inches closer to the angel. He had not anticipated this question. He stutters over the first three “well”s, and eventually stammers out: “Key to my flat. Thought you could have it.”

Crowley tries to give Aziraphale a key to his flat. It goes about as well as you would expect.

Aziraphale does not invite himself into other people’s flats. He’s as bad as a vampire that way, was in fact mistaken for one in 1547 for insisting very loudly that he couldn’t possibly step foot inside someone’s home without an invitation. Crowley had to miracle away the smell of garlic.
