“I do not wish to be absolved. I want to know why. Why do I feel this… this ache where my soul should be?”
Guillermo’s breath shakes as he exhales. The grate is thin, so thin that a determined man could crash through it and wrap hands around his neck, force the life out of him. “You feel guilt.”
“Why now? Why at all? Why— fuck-ing hell.” The last bit comes out as a pained gasp, and Guillermo can see the man’s head duck, his shoulders hunch. “Can we do this outside? It hurts in here.”

And the beating; steady, earthen, and rich, there was a beating whose booming and wriggling sound waves trembled this creation from machine to man, a beating that grew faster and louder every time a pair of sun-bronzed eyes melted over him like armour.

“No. Absolutely not. I’d do a lot of shit for you, Kurapika. But not this.”
Kurapika just raises his brow. He sways his head to the side, blond hair curling around his bare shoulder. He steps around the corner of the desk, fingers dragging across the wood top. He stops in front of Leorio and brushes a hand over his knee.
“Why not? What does it matter to you?”
Leorio feels the veins in his hand pop, protruding angrily in his balled-up fist. He grits his teeth, and the impassive expression on Kurapika’s face makes his entire body ache.
“You know damn well what it matters.”
Kurapika tucks his hair behind his right ear, red jewel earring glittering in the afternoon sun. He slides his leg forward and brushes their thighs together, fabric of Leorio’s sweatpants bunching up beneath Kurapika’s hip. Kurapika settles himself on Leorio’s lap, one hand on Leorio’s knee, the other braced against the back of the chair.
“It’s just work, darling.”

Summary
There’s a winter chill to the air when she walks out of the building. Despite having been driving for over a year, it still takes Lilith some time to get her car started, and she catches sight of Ash leaving from the gym door exit while she’s pulling out. She recognizes the boy walking next to him as the Japanese exchange student in her photography class. Eddie? Eggie? Doesn’t matter. Even without knowing his name, she can tell that Ash looks different than he did in the library minutes ago, or at the lunch table with his friends in the afternoon.
On an average day, Ash is beautiful in the same way that a star is while it falls to earth— as tired and dangerous as is glamorous, but in the view she has of him right now, he just looks like a normal kid with his friend. He has forgone being unknowable, and Lilith thinks that if she were to look closely she could see whatever it is that he tries to hide away from everyone else. She looks away instead.
Yeah, right. A friend.
