Summary
The door swings open. In a split second, Billy remembers they forgot to lock the door. In a split second, Steve’s on his feet and standing half in front of him, shielding him from the intruder.
“It’s not what it looks like!” Steve shrieks, and for a too long moment all Billy can really make sense of is the way his hair sticks out in all directions and his pretty brown eyes open wide, wide, wide.
Then he zeros in on Max.

Summary
And Billy interrupts him then, says, “Mom.”
Mom. Such a simple word.
Billy says it like it means something else entirely. Something holy. Something ugly. Something that refuses to die even though it’s been beat down time and time again.

Summary
Come morning, it doesn’t take long for people to put two and two together and figure out Steve and Billy fought. It’s glaringly obvious, after all, both their faces swollen with bruises, their knuckles scraped and raw—and they avoid each other in the halls, too, clenched jaws and charged glances, neither one of them will say what their damn fight was about.
By the end of the day Ms. Kelley has them sitting side by side in front of her desk, twin sour expressions and pinched mouths.

Summary
“You ever thought you’d die like this?”
Steve takes a long time to answer. Long enough that Billy wonders if maybe he fell asleep, even though it’s supposed to be his turn keeping watch. But he does reply, a good thirty seconds later, a drawn out sentence, annoyed but mostly unsure, “We’re not going to die.”
