“I am congratulating my very talented boyfriend on winning the race and an absolutely insane comeback,” Charles replies and he’s using his teeth at that point to tease at his ear, then lower over his neck. “Speaking of…maybe you should come on my back. Get it?”
Max’s cheeks, his whole chest really, flush with heat and he looks to the ceiling. Did he just make a sex pun? A sex pun based in English? Where did he hear that?? He laughs, but it ends up cut off around a deep moan when Charles sucks over his pulse. “Y-You’re in nice clothes,” he mumbles.
“Does that not just make it more satisfying when you ruin them?” the Monegasque wonders before licking a long path up the side of his neck and biting his jaw.

It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.
It was supposed to be planned around his schedule- aligned with winter break, maybe. Or even after he’d retired. He should’ve been with his partner, whoever they were; he’d never dared hope it would be Max. He should’ve been wrapped in their embrace, murmuring hushed words of excitement to one another as they waited for the minutes to pass and a result to show on the test.
They should’ve found out together. Ready. Eager. Full of love.
Instead it was like this: alone, curled on a cold bathroom floor, a painfully impersonal PDF staring at Charles from his phone. The only positivity to be found in the situation was sitting in the results column of the file, neatly slotted next to the word pregnancy.
The email. The result. The loneliness. It was all too much. Charles began to cry once again.
At the top of his screen, a response popped up with impeccable timing.

Craning his neck behind them, Daniel laughs his loud, creaky hyena laugh. “Don’t look now, but he’s still watching.”
“Who?”
“Chuck.”
“Chuck. There’s no way he lets you call him that,” Max says, voice rife with disbelief. He also can’t help it—he turns around, jostling Daniel’s arm over his shoulder to look back toward the media pen. Charles is in fact still watching them disappear down the paddock. His head is tilted to one side, a look of consideration on his pretty face. He doesn’t look actively upset, but he doesn’t look particularly happy either. Fuck.
“He doesn’t let me do anything. I just sort of do it and he laughs and blushes and looks at me with his big cow eyes.”
“Big cow eyes,” Max repeats, disbelieving yet again.
“Not actually, but sort of,” Daniel says, grin making his eyes crinkle. What the fuck.
“He’s blushing at you?” Max sounds petulant. Jealous, even. He needs to get a grip.

The conviction in his voice is replaced by snark when he adds, “Speaking from experience, no one likes a sour loser.”
Caught unaware, he is frozen in place. What the fuck? Did Charles really call him a loser, on the fucking podium?
Fuck apologizing, Max thinks, I’ll show that fucker what losing is.
