She turned off her phone and stretched on her bedside, yawning. That match was certainly… eventful. Whatever this person was going through with their friend, she wished the best for them. It was already thoughtful enough, wasn’t it? To try something out of your comfort zone for someone else.
It reminded her of how Rui would sometimes play with her whenever he came over. He’d play as Luigi in Super Mario, or Mugman in Cuphead… granted, he almost always died within a few minutes—sometimes seconds—but the thought and effort were there.
Rui decides to try an FPS game in hopes of getting closer to Nene, soon realizing his lack of knowledge in internet slang.

Nene pointedly didn’t look in his direction and continued walking. She could handle this, right? Rui would be acting alongside her throughout less than half of the musical. And by then she’d have to k—eugh—ki—save me—kiss him.
When Nene's co-star is unable to perform due to certain circumstances, his replacement turns out to be the boy who'd broken her heart long ago… But maybe, just maybe, things were different this time around.

When an orphaned Rui is brought into the estate of the Kusanagis, Princess Kusanagi Nene detests him at first, wholly prejudiced towards the boy. Yet his eccentric and well-read nature made him fascinating and all the more confusing to her.

It wasn’t fair how Rui could act so carelessly about this. Nene didn’t exactly believe in ghosts either, but she always tiptoed around the subject carefully in case they did exist. With how many horror games she’s played, one would think she would be desensitized by now, but there’s a stark difference between experiencing something through a screen and real life. She’s seen enough movies to know this much: Never mess with what you don’t understand.
In a search to disprove the existence of ghosts, Rui enlists the (unwilling) help of WxS to hunt for the elusive ghost of Kamiyama! Except, the group ends up finding more than what they expected…

The idea circled Rui’s mind like a lazy boat floating in the sea. Wouldn’t discussing it make things complicated, awkward? Nene could look at him in utter contempt after he admits he has these kinds of feelings for her. Pessimistic? Probably, but Rui wanted to believe he was being realistic.
He observed the dark ceiling, eyes unfocusing until everything began to blur. Imagining these stars connecting, moving apart, blinking in and out—if someone were to catch him right now, they’d think of him deranged. Then, two stars formed. Very bright stars that seemed to inch closer to each other, until one began to fade, which the second one followed. Slowly, they drifted away.
Who was he to ruin the friendship? People broke up for pettier reasons, and friendships are so fragile. Maybe he was already walking a fraying tightrope.
Nene gets confessed to by a classmate. Rui gets jealous.

Though the two have drifted into two different circles, there’s still some thread, some bind that keeps them close enough, but not far away. There remains parts of themselves they see in the other. Almost like looking into a distorted mirror, but understanding how it’s still some version of you staring back.
And she’s glad. Glad that they were able to reconnect, even as completely new people compared to when they met, they’ve both changed for the better.
