Way back in the day, before I had even finished watching Black Sails, I became totally convinced that Silver and Flint could have been fucking for the whole show and the dynamic would still work, and it wouldn’t necessarily change the outcome at all. The show narrative withholds information after all. That is basically the premise of this series. It is canon compliant perhaps to a fault, and evolves in many of the same ways as the show in terms of tone. As such - do not expect it to hurt any less. This is a love story. Flint awakens in his cabin the day after setting sail for the Urca with a chest somehow as miraculously full as a nursing mother, and wonders if he’s actually fucking cursed.
He retrieves the looking glass he uses to shave–ornate and gilded, stolen off of a Dutch merchant some seven years ago–from his sea chest. Briskly stripping out of his shirt, he moves nearer to the window to have enough light to survey the situation. The reflective surface reveals the problem in far more detail, and he frowns all the mightier: his chest, ordinarily comprised of the hard and defined muscle of a life spent sailing, has swollen to… concerning proportions. The flesh has softened and ballooned into heavy mounds, the skin taut and full.
