They’re having pre-drill breakfast. It’s six in the morning, the sky a mottled blue out their dining room window, and their daughter is still asleep. Art’s drinking his green smoothie monotonously, eyes flickering through an article on his phone. He hasn’t scrolled in minutes.
Tashi sets down her coffee. “What happened?”
Art looks up too slow, trying to pocket his surprise at being caught. “What?”
“With Patrick.” Tashi takes a moment to place a forkful of scrambled egg whites in her mouth and chew. “I didn’t see him after the final. I assumed you saw him in the locker room…among other things.”
Art stares.

“Patrick.”
The noise from the other half of the bed stops abruptly, a sharp inhale the only other tip off that Patrick heard him. A thick silence fills the room. The lack of A/C has never been starker.
A second passes. Two. Three. Four. Five. The more they add up the more Art thinks he might have fucked up.
Then, “Art.”
It comes out graveled, hoarse. It makes Art’s toes curl.
Art moves— rolls half onto his shoulder blade, not yet fully facing Patrick. He trains his eyes onto the ugly popcorn ceiling. “Are you…” he trails off. Doesn’t need to finish the sentence.
“Yeah,” comes the breathy response, right away. Unabashed. Unashamed.
Art’s shaky exhale. Hand floating up, over his stomach. Drifting lower. Fingertips touching the waistband of his boxers. He doesn’t say anything, but he doesn’t need to.
Patrick knows.
“You can too,” he says, encourages, “if you want.” The sound of skin on skin starts back up, slow again, deliberately loud. Teasing. “I don’t mind,” Patrick adds, “like old times.”
Or, Art can't sleep, and lucky for him, neither can Patrick.

“So it’s been… twelve years?” Patrick asks around the filter. He inhales deeply, and when he finally lifts it from his lips he blows the smoke in a steady stream past Art’s ear. He holds the cigarette out towards Art, an offering.
Art shakes his head. “Thirteen, actually,” not that he’s counting, “and, no, thanks, I quit,” he says. “Tashi wanted me to.”
It feels weird to say her name here. Feels a little bit like an invocation, Repeat Tashi Donaldson three times in the mirror while spinning in circles and she’ll appear right behind you.
“Right,” Patrick muses and takes another drag. “What have you been up to for thirteen years?”
Art’s eyes roll towards him with an unimpressed slant. “As if you don’t already know that,” he says. His lips press together and he tilts his head at Patrick, daring him to contradict.
Patrick shrugs one shoulder. “Sure I do,” he says. Knocks the same shoulder into Art’s. He’s close enough to do that. “But I want to hear it from you.”
Or, shared cigarettes, shared lamentations, and shared breath after the Phil's Tire Town Challenger Final.

Tashi is like a siren, her honey-sweet smile contrasted by her fierce gaze. The way she’s asking questions is like she's tossing a hook and it’s sinking into Patrick’s flesh like butter. She doesn’t even need to try hard for it. He thinks he’d tell her anything, if it meant having those eyes on him and not on Art for a moment longer.
