Summary
"Her boss Meg reminds her of Natalie, a bit, and the elementary school lunch lady who would yell at them to stop fooling around in line but never made them pay for the full-fat milk cartons she slipped into their hands, as if she could tell by their boniness alone that Vera and Vicky never bothered to fill out the forms for free and reduced lunch."
Or, Van's not alone in the years after Taissa and before her return, at least not for a little while.

Summary
“We have to break her, Tai,” Shauna said, handing Tai the knife. “We can’t trust her.”
“She’s a liability,” Tai said, frowning into the gleam of Shauna’s knife. “She knows the mountains better than any of us. If she got away…”
“Exactly,” Shauna hissed. “Do you see what I fucking mean now?”
“You’re right,” Tai said to Shauna’s metallic reflection. She tucked the knife away.
“Show me the blood when you come back.”

Summary
'c’mon, open the fuck up,' the person shouts, and you’re drunk because it sounds like— it sounds like—
you open the door.
van palmer is standing there, red hair cut jaggedly to her chin, a purple-yellow bruise fading across the unscarred half of her face, her fingers wrapped loosely around a handle of paint thinner masquerading poorly as vodka.

Summary
Fact of life: Van is funny.
Taissa learns this less than five minutes into freshman year soccer tryouts, when the goalkeeper comes tearing out of the locker room and trips over her own feet in her haste, tumbling onto the turf gracelessly. She pops up laughing before anyone else can start and cracks a joke that makes the giggles rising from the other girls mirthful instead of judgmental.

Summary
Shauna is crouched in front of the goalkeeper, talking quietly as she reaches out to check the bandages tied around her cheek, and Taissa’s stomach plummets when Van flinches away from the outstretched hand so hard she smacks her head against the cabin wall.
Shuana exclaims in surprise, withdrawing her hand as Van’s eyes lock on her again, blown with fear.
“Woah, hey,” she says, edging backwards like she expects Van to snap at her hand.
“Taissa, wait—” Natalie’s voice fades into the background as Taissa rips her wrist out of the blonde’s loose hold and makes her way across the cabin frantically. She’s already murmuring soothing nothings as she crouches down beside Van, hands reaching to close the space between them, freezing when Van jerks back with a whine. She leans in closer, chest tightening at the way Van shrinks back, but unwilling to pull away without finding what she’s looking for.
