No, he won't have to do that in the first place. He's going right prevail and find out everything he's ever wanted to know, because his other half was the Fount of Knowledge. Things even the books in the academy couldn't pick up on, or things he forbade from being in those books in the first place. When he and Shadow Milk became one for a few moments, he saw everything.
Except one thing, it was blocked off, buried deep with thousands of locks and chains on it. Black vines were coiled around it, whispering warnings and growing thicker at whoever decided to step closer to it and test their warnings.
Pure Vanilla needed to know what was kept so tightly there, kept him from knowing everything he could about Shadow Milk, because he's the only one who could possibly understand him.
TL;DR --> Pure Vanilla strives to figure out the truth Shadow Milk could never accept.

Summary
The scribe of the Akademiya is a very straight forward man, he wants life to be as easy and care free as possible. He's willing to do whatever it takes to have that type of lifestyle, even if it means ending his own at the cliff that once comforted him so.
Similarly, an architectect decides that a life full of hardships isn't the one he wishe to follow anymore, so the cliff is the way to go.
The two meet each other at what they thought was going to be their most peaceful moments of their unfulfilled lives, yet both knew deep down this wasn't how they should end it.
There is one thing they can agree on, it's better to die than to suffer, but why not have someone to suffer with?

"No Troll left behind!" King Peppy hollered down the tunnel as he threw the large ball of trolls out of the way of the shovel breaking through the ground.
