The thing is, Feng Xin knows he isn't gay. Or bi. Or anything that isn't 100% straight, because contrary to popular opinion he has thought about it, he has considered the fact that heterosexuality can be compulsive and there might be something he's missing.
But he's not gay. He's sure of it. Because Xie Lian is his best friend and he's never wanted to fuck him.
Like, sure, he’s thought about it, but he’s never wanted to. Thinking is fine. Thinking isn’t gay. Thinking is a thought exercise.
The point is, if someone doesn’t want Xie Lian, they’re obviously not attracted to men as a whole. That’s just logic. Feng Xin is sure Mu Qing would agree. By the laws of logic he also wants to fuck Xie Lian, even if he wouldn’t, because if he did Feng Xin would never be able to look either of them in the eye ever again, too busy thinking about that sour feeling in his gut from Mu Qing —
But not because he’s homophobic. He isn’t. Just — he’s not gay.

“Is this…” there was no delicate way to put this. Riku exhaled. “Is this something, Um, intimate? That vampires generally... do with someone you’re uh...seeing?” Sora would never get that. He clarified. “Romantically?”
“What?!” Sora squeaked, and his laugh was too loud in the door room, even with the classical elevator music in the background. “No! No way! Riku, you’re crazy.” He tried to slap his arm, missed, then finally connected when Riku slid his shoulder forward to meet him out of pity. “That’s just a coincidence!”
“You’re being jumpy,” Riku sat up with a frown, eyes narrowed. “I’m right, aren’t I?”
"Maybe..."
“I mean. It doesn’t...have to mean that, right?”
Sora frantically shook his head. “Not if we agree it doesn’t, right? Just. Best friends. Biting.”
“Right,” Riku agreed, even though his very soul was screaming. “Okay.”

Riku needed one thing: an apartment to live in. That was it. But he didn't really have any other options than the apartment listing that read "must be okay with a very sweet cat and one somewhat messy ghost." He didn't expect the apartment (or what counted as the ghost) to change his life. He definitely didn't plan on magic or witches. And Sora - well, Sora was a bonus, a beautiful shining person who didn't deserve the ugly black curse on his heart. Sora, who went out of his way to help people. Sora, who was magic. Sora, who glowed.
It was inevitable, probably, that someone as lonely Riku would fall in love with him. Discovering everything he was missing and everything he had forgotten, now that was a surprise to them both.

The first thing Riku makes—on his own, entirely, something his—is a swallow. It flutters to life between his cupped hands, bleeding little clouds of black that blot out the light between every stroke—until he opens them enough to see by, the tiny body beating its wings to get free. It feels too light to be real, but as a shadow that’s probably all he can hope for.
The making takes on a new facet of exploration, of curiosity—and here, in the belly of a ship with his memories pleasantly fuzzed around the edges, he can’t remember why he’d ever thought that was a weakness.
The first time he summons it, he tells himself it’s just for the sheer reason that he can.

The light had been so immensely abused, it collapsed in on itself. His heart’s screaming desire to release all the darkness Sora had accidentally repressed had broken loose. It all happened too quickly for him to fight against it—he felt his body sigh with an unsavory relief as his mind went dark. It felt like he was drowning in thick ink. It was a familiar sensation, almost like falling asleep, but with a gluttonous sweet taste left lingering in his mouth.
