Summary
Kim calls Harry when he’s drinking.
Most of the time, you call him sober, late at night after looking over your case notes out on your balcony, smoking a cigarette and staring down into the dark courtyard. “Kim,” he’ll say, voice deep in your ear. Often, the radio in the background of his apartment, always playing something different, as he rediscovers his tapes. Disco and rock and jazz and, once - which you ask him to turn down - Iilmaran throat-singing. Or, you will call him when you listen to WEATHER FM at night and find the weather will be bad the following day. You tell him, on these calls, that you will pick him up in the morning. Often, when you do, you find he has gone down to the corner kiosk and picked you up a newspaper, or gotten the two of you pastries, and he will be drenched, which defeats the purpose of picking him up. You tell him this, and he just winks at you.

Kim and Harry walk in Central Jamrock.
He approaches as the song ends, and begins to talk to them. He asks if they can show him the moves - and attempts to replicate the footwork by himself. He laughs. The woman says something; he gestures. He takes her hand by the fingertips only - just barely holding it. Saying something to the musicians, the music starts up again, the same song but slowed down, and she puts her other hand on Harry’s shoulder, and, pushing him, guides him through the steps. They do it once, then twice, picking up speed, and then, suddenly, they’re dancing. Harry is moving carefully. Light feet, hips - a spin - his movements light and precise, perfectly in his body. He’s lost in it, you see, the two of them dancing on the street, dark cold of springtime. The woman’s red dress and Harry’s green jacket, flashing flowers in the dark. They move fluidly, gracefully. Watching them, you feel something huge and painful swell in your chest, and you rub at it, idly.
“Don’t you want to try, Kim?” Harry calls out, still looking down, watching their feet. A flashy dance, you think, fast, not without its charms. You prefer them slower, quieter. More drawn out.
