You’d tried not to grimace. “Yeah, I know, I’m sorry-”

“But I- that day, really Jean, I’m trying to understand what happened-”
He’d slammed his desk drawer shut to end your sentence before you could. “There’s nothing to *understand*. You told me to fuck off and then *forgot*. So here’s me returning the favor: fuck off, Harry, and stop fucking asking. I’m not a- a reel of goddamn ferrotape for you to play back. You want to know? Remember it yourself.” -

EMPATHY - The last time he traveled this way was six months ago. It is as though nothing has changed.
INLAND EMPIRE - Nothing *has* changed, and nothing ever will. Martinaise is a land out of time - even as the seasons pass, fundamentally it will never be any more or less than it is right now.
VOLITION - Even so, it is enough.

“I have a solution for you.” She looks down into her messenger bag, lifting the flap. “Something from the ‘dancing legend’ himself.” The words come out dead pan, with a hint of fondness and sarcasm.
“What?” Andre stands a bit straighter, mostly from confusion. “The cop-man?”
"Maybe some of his… whatever he had rubbed off on it. Or inspire you to dance like him. I dunno, just wear it. You might like it.” She has to shout over the pounding music.
“Isn’t that what that stupid pulp detective guy wears?"
“No, it’s what the dance machine who got us into this church and gave you your track wears.”
Egg Head spots the hat in Acele’s hands and lights up, even more excitement stretching across his face.
“THE WARRIOR OF DANCE MUSIC!”
