“And you’re sick.” Steve rubs his hand over his face, breathing out hard all at once. “Okay, give me twenty minutes, I’m coming to get you.”
He hates that Max still lives there, hates that there’s nothing that he can do, hates that he gets told what happens in that house and can just be a witness to it, because Max only tells him and Lucas the whole of it, and what she only tells Lucas, he usually tells Steve.
“No,” Max protests, and her voice gets pitchy, urgent, before she remembers to hush herself. “If he knows I called you he’ll kill me. Please, please don’t come.”
AKA: The entire student body of Hawkins has simultaneously developed the stomach bug from impromptu sewage-related food contamination, and Steve "The Babysitter" Harrington has to gather one of his wayward charges. It ends badly.

Summary
Because every day after he woke up still in pain, and he couldn’t even tell his own family (because what if I can’t be a firefighter anymore? what if they don’t let me?). And then he’s hugging Eddie and they’re welcoming him home and maybe, just maybe, for a second he believes that it won’t be so bad.
Because then he was choking on his own blood staring into Bobby’s eyes thinking this is it, isn’t it? And then he woke up because damn, he always wakes up and somehow that’s always worse. And he wants to laugh at himself because how did he think, even for a moment, that anything would ever be ok?
Because then he was on blood thinners and they wouldn’t let him home, and he just wanted to go home (what if I can’t be a firefighter anymore?)
Because then the lawsuit happened and he just lost everything all over again.
Because
“You’re exhausting.”
(Or Buck's always been sad but it's post lawsuit, and Buck just can't handle it anymore)

“Just say it, Chim,” Eddie replies, his tone clipped.
Chimney winces but presses on. “Eddie…” He hesitates, glancing at Karen like he’s begging her for an out. She nods firmly. No turning back now. “Buck is dead.”
The line goes silent. A heavy, eerie silence that settles over the room like a shroud. She knows what Eddie must be feeling right now—the cold shock, the hollow ache, the frantic disbelief. She remembers how it felt when Chim had told her Hen was dead, how her world had stopped spinning for one agonizing moment. Her hands curl into fists against the table. This is fine. This is part of the plan.
But then there’s a screech through the phone, followed by an extended, blaring honk.
Karen’s stomach drops. Her eyes dart to Hen’s, wide with alarm.
Fuck.
OR: When Eddie leaves for Texas on bad terms with Buck, their friends can't help but meddle.
