His talons, so sharp and thin they seemed closer to taut black tendrils of cloth, twitched in expectation. This was the only sign that a heart was beating deep down under layers of stone hard, black as night scales.

Akutagawa shrugs, and it's once again silence between them. And the problem is exactly with this, right there and right now.
How their bickering and banter has shifted; changed so quietly that even Atsushi wasn't aware of it. These days, Akutagawa's insults doesn't feel like actual insults. They have more normal conversations, and some teasings here and there. Akutagawa has changed, and Atsushi doesn't know why.
When Atsushi tries to steal a glance from Akutagawa, he's startled to find the other man already looking at him from the corner of his eyes.
Something shines in Akutagawa's eyes, and Atsushi has no idea what.

Soft thought it is, the epiphany hits Atsushi hard. The reason why Akutagawa won’t look at him, why he won’t talk to him. He never hesitated to say anything nasty before, which means that what he wants to say now isn’t nasty at all. It’s nice.
The thought defies belief, yet the more Atsushi looks at Akutagawa, the more certain he becomes. In a distant part of his brain, Atsushi hears Kunikida bellow at him to think. Careful Kunikida. Clever Dazai. But Atsushi is not them, he is not a careful, clever man, he is a beast of muscle and blood, driven by instinct and the heart that howls within him, so he does not think.
He acts, lifting a hand and touching the side of Akutagawa’s face with light, hopeful fingers.

Summary
After an ability user named Arthur Miller forces Tanizaki and Noami to flee to Berlin, Germany, Atsushi and Akutagawa are sent after them. It wouldn't be such a problem if not for the fact that there are obviously unresolved tensions between the two. Atsushi can barely trust his own feelings and Akutagawa knows that a relationship would be a bad idea. Lucky for them, if there's a recipe to make them sort it out it's a shared motel room, fretting over each other's health, and nearly killing each other.

Summary
The lingering smell of smoke and ash brings back memories that Nakajima Atsushi has tried to forget. Memories that bring back a past that Atsushi has tried to run away from. But once he understood that he could never escape the ghosts that haunted him, Atsushi decided to put his soul into helping other people. That’s how he became a promising detective assigned to the elite unit of the Yokohama Police Department.
Atsushi has been doing a great job since he joined the group of detectives and forensic investigators from the Crime Lab that works with them.
But even his strong will is broken by the deaths of the four children who lived in the orphanage that burned down.
To make matters worse, his unstable emotions interfere with his complicated relationship with Akutagawa Ryuunosuke, a member of the Crime Lab.
