Unsurprisingly, it’s Dustin on the other end. Kid’s a pest. “Oh thank God, dude. You can’t hold out on me like that,” Dustin sighs with out of place relief—if something super major was going on, he would’ve started with that. So if nothing’s going down, why does he sound so relieved?
“It’s three in the morning. I was sleeping and you woke me up. What the hell are you doing awake anyway? Don’t you have a bedtime?” He shoots back, still slightly pissed about being disturbed from his beauty sleep, but the feeling mellows into worry when Dustin hesitates to respond. There’s definitely something else going on here; there always is. “Hey, is everything okay?”

Dustin keeps staring down at that exact image, painting it across the confines of his skull over and over again, muddling the image but still keeping it horrifically clear. He sees it when he closes his eyes, only long enough to blink, because if he keeps them closed any longer he isn’t sure Eddie will still be there when they open, and he sees it even when his eyes are open; Eddie, staring slightly to the left of Dustin, his eyes dull and so clearly void of life and he would close them but he can’t bear to move or to forget what they look like.

Summary
Chell was of the idea that the CEO of Aperture Science died along with it. As was everyone and everything associated with this nightmarish labyrinth, he had been lost to time and history, left to rot in the ashes of his mistake. Or, it was possible he died years before the flood of neurotoxin that suffocated everyone inside and never got to see what became of his disaster, taking all of Aperture's secrets with him. Secrets the world may never know.
But here, staring down at this babbling, modified storage cube, Chell believed that, even the nastiest, deepest, darkest secrets could never hide themselves for long.
