“No point in killing me now.” Sasuke points out. “I’m an important asset to Konoha. And the Hokage’s closest friend and advisor.”
Sai blinks. “I know.” he says. “I was under the impression we were bantering.”
“We were.” Sasuke sighs. “You’ve ruined it now, though.”
“Sorry to ruin your mood.” Sai says. “If it’s too uncomfortable for you, I’m sure no one would care if you just went home now.”
Sasuke looks at him. Then he stands up and walks into the kitchen to pull Naruto aside.
“Is Sai single?” he asks.
Naruto looks at him bewildered. “Wh-huh?”
“Sai.” Sasuke says. For some reason everything is not instantly clarified.
“I mean-yes?” Naruto says. “Why the hell are you asking me? What are you thinking about-hey! Get back here!”
Sasuke ignores him and walks back into the couch, sitting right back where he had been, but with an extra inch between him and Sai.

“You could at least try to be grateful for my presence.” Jigen says chidingly. He tilts his head upwards minutely. “Here. Look at that.”
Amado looks up. He blinks a few times. He looks back at Jigen.
“What about it?”
“You heard what she said.” Jigen says. “It’s bad luck.”
“That’s not some sort of…legitimate rule or consequence. It’s just a cheap superstition.”
“You should know by now better than to discount superstition, Amado.” Jigen tilts his head, eyes catching the light bloodily.

Amado rolls his eyes and raises his glass again. “I don’t know what’s with this playful side of yours recently, Jigen.” he grumbles. “No one would ever believe me if I told them.”
Jigen smiles to himself and runs a finger across his own glass, gently around the rim. He only presses slightly, collecting a little pressure against the thin, fine line of it.
“Don’t get too comfortable.” he warns.
Amado laughs dryly, but genuinely. When it’s real, it comes from his chest, and he resists it as it comes out.
“I’m sure that won’t be a problem.”

“I want to equip more Inners...even Outers.” Jigen agrees. “Like with Deepa, it will hasten my plans for Kara as an organization. And for you,” he tilts his head, “I think you need a change of pace.”
Amado blinks. Trust Jigen to shift the status quo as soon as he thinks he understands it.
“I’m not sure I see the urgency for something like that.” he says cautiously. “Maybe somewhere later along the line…”
“It is a partially selfish request, after all.” Jigen says. “After all this time, I’m interested to see you work."
Amado stares him down across the table, mildly suspicious. In terms of ulterior motives, Jigen is consistently implacable. Now is no exception.
After three years of cohabitation, Amado is familiar with the other man's mood swings, his dry sarcasm, his uncharacteristic, misleadingly laid back demeanor-even his penchant for alcohol. But he’s never been able to find out anything about Jigen’s own thoughts and feelings without Jigen wanting him to. And Jigen is perfectly content to remain a mystery.

“Are you sure there’s nothing I can do to help?” Naruto says abruptly after they hug. “I know I’m not politically minded, but I’m pretty good at investigating when things get shifty.”
“I don’t want to stress you out any more than I have to.” Hinata says, tugging her hat down over her ears. It’s a chilly day.
“Well, I am going to be king, ya know.” Naruto says. “I’m not gonna be running the country, but I’ll have some pull. So I’d like to start helping out where I can. It’s more stressful for me to stand by than anything.”
Hinata glances up at him, then smiles slightly.
“You’re right.”
“I usually am.”
“It’s not much, but I can convince Tsunade to let you in our meetings about the initiative.” Hinata continues. “You’re going to be my consort. I shouldn’t keep you in the dark.”
“Thanks, Hinata.” Naruto grins. “I promise to do my best.”
“You always do.”

“Sai.” Naruto snaps. “Come on.” Sai realizes he’s stalled a bit, so he picks up the pace. Naruto is angry at him. He knows why, but he doesn’t understand it. Seeing Naruto struggling to stand, face dripping blood, and still clinging to Sasuke, had pushed something inside of him to the edge. It made him angry. Surely Naruto understands not wanting a comrade to be hurt?
Well, Sai supposes, if Naruto was completely rational, he wouldn’t be Naruto.
