Bella blinked and she could see Thorin's smile, the way tiny lines appeared around his eyes, making him come alive and not be some stern statue that disapproved of her always. She blinked again and she was dangling from his fist, the ground so far below her and only madness in his eyes. Blink and the eagles were coming. Blink and Gandalf had arrived to heal Thorin and the boys. Blink and she was at Beorn's and vomiting her lungs out, already knowing that she had a babe on the way. Blink and she was giving birth at Rivendell, screaming formless words to keep from calling Thorin's name. Blink and she was at the White Council, watching them come to the realization that her pretty little ring was the One Ring of Sauron and her whole world came crashing down around her. Yet again.

Fingolfin clenched his jaw shut on the first few things that wanted to slip out of his mouth. Well had he heard of Fëanor for his whole life. Their father was full of his praise. The Noldor were in awe of his craft. It felt like only he and Finarfin could see the darkness in their brother, that jealous pride that always seemed to want to push them out, push them away, to never let them close. “What of him? What has he done now?”

His wrists burned from tearing himself free of the ropes that had held him down. It was all he could do to put one foot in front of the other, praying that they would somehow find a way to safety.

The morning light was just hitting the top of their trees, which meant it was early. Far too early to be up. But there was no arguing with their father – or their mother, who had been the one who wanted to go on this trip and their father would remake the world if their mother but said the word. So on this camping trip they went.
