“Yeah well, he’s not here is he?” Pete muttered in response. Joe sighed heavily. “I know, I know he isn’t” he pinched the bridge of his nose. “I miss him, too, Pete.”
“You weren’t gonna marry him.”Just when everything seems to be going better than it possibly could, it goes to hell. For some more literally than others.

Summary
Lyrics shoved into bottles keep showing up in the ocean, and Patrick can't help but sing them once he reads them. It's not helped by the fact that he feels sorry for the human that writes them and throws them into the ocean nearly everyday. So when the lyrics start to come less frequently, Patrick begins to worry. What could have happened to this human named "Pete"? A suicide letter and a rescue mission later, and Patrick is willing to do anything to help this human.
A cursed bottle is all he needs, and the trade for his siren voice for a pair of human legs is struck. Too bad he failed to listen to all of the rules before making his deal.

This will make so much more sense if you read that firstPete never said he liked the week-on, week-off relationship he had with his son. His son, even three and a half years later, it still blew his mind that he was a father. He’d sworn he’d never have kids, because he knew he’d be an unstable wreck half of the time and on tour the other half, but so far, everything had worked out okay, hadn’t been insanely fucked up, and that came as a surprise to all parties involved, except Bronx. The little devil had complete faith in his fathers; he was sure that Pete and Patrick held all the answers to the universe when really, they just held a phone equipped with the power of Google. And damn it, he loved the kid, almost more than he loved Patrick if that was possible, even though he was just a little brat who coloured on Hemmingway and made siren noises during Reno 911.

Patrick’s seconds away from breaking down, from throwing the briefcase out the window and praying he’ll never see it again. He’s moments away from slamming it shut and tossing it in the ocean. He’s breaths away from calling his mom and asking her to come get him because he’s honestly scared for his life.
All of these thoughts disappear with the simple sound of Pete breathing next to him, letting out a breath that could pass for a laugh. Patrick wants to look over at him, to grab him and ask him to fix this. Pete, though, is already ahead of him.
“Well,” Pete says, tossing an arm over Patrick’s shoulders and drawing him close. It’s a simple act but it puts the younger boy at ease. “They want us to be defenders? Awesome. At least they know we’ll go down swinging.”

The hiatus was something that was supposed to give them time apart from each other, to calm down and relax from the tension. But a briefcase might be enough to dash all those plans.
