Summary
"Many stages in Eridian reproductive process. Rocky Adrian laying cycles finally sync up recently. So, Rocky Adrian think finally time for eggs. Adrian lay five eggs, very good. Only, strange thing happen. Rocky only lay one egg."
“Oh,” I say. “That’s unusual, right?”
"Very," Rocky hums.
My throat tightens. "Does that mean there's something wrong? Are you sick?"
Rocky makes a gesture I usually interpret as "not exactly". "Not sick," he says. "But doctors still worry. When Eridian start to make fewer eggs, this usually means laying period of life is over soon. Rocky very young for this. Rocky supposed to be in ideal time of life for laying. Rocky younger than Adrian, even." He shifts on three of his feet. Already, my mind is racing ahead, wondering -- "Doctors told Rocky to ask Grace, is this radiation side effect, question?"

Summary
Grace clings to the zenonite ball as tightly as he can, trying to trick his mind into believing that the smooth, warm surface was what it was after. That this hug shared between two species unable to coexist in the same environment is enough to satisfy his human instincts.
His skin prickles. The tears keep falling. It isn’t enough. And it will stay that way for as long as he is away from Earth.
A shudder runs through the man at this bleak thought, the ever-expanding pit in his chest feeling as though it’s swallowing up his entire being.
As if he heard the emotional casam split further, Rocky’s warbles take on a mournful croon. “Grace, tell Rocky what wrong. Please?”
Grace presses his tear-stained cheek against the warm surface, sighing miserably.
“I’m touch starved.”
Or... Grace's years of isolation from humans result in severe touch starvation. Rocky takes one look at this problem and says, "Hold my minerals."

Summary
If you drop a frog in a pot of boiling water, it will of course frantically try to clamber out. But if you place it gently in a pot of tepid water and turn the heat on low, it will float there quite placidly. As the water gradually heats up, the frog will sink into a tranquil stupor, exactly like one of us in a hot bath, and before long, with a smile on its face, it will unresistingly allow itself to be boiled to death.
-Daniel Quinn, The Story of B
As Grace and Rocky work to save their suns, Rocky begins courting Grace. Except Grace has no idea he's being courted and Rocky has no plans to tell him any time soon.

♪So humans do not need to care about viruses, question?♪
“Well… we do need to care a little. Some viruses cause more severe infections than others. Influenza, for example, is pretty inconvenient for most people. It can cause nausea, fever, nose leaking, aches, coughing, and more. It can even be deadly for people with weak immune systems, like children or the very old. We definitely take it seriously when someone vulnerable gets infected. Influenza is one of the diseases we vaccinate for. Who remembers what vaccination is?”
The entire class raised their claws. Grace facepalmed.
“Right, duh. Forget I asked.”
♪Cannot forget.♪ Someone chimed, eliciting several giggling thrills.

Ryland Grace has an annoyingly short lifespan by Eridian standards. Rocky fix. Good thing the human came with a laptop full of all human knowledge and a human who can explain it.

Summary
"Grace," he says again, still attempting to get my attention.
"Yeah, Rock?"
"Your sound."
"Sorry, didn't realize I was making noise."
"How not realize, question."
I shrug. "It's just a habit."
"What were you saying?"
I try to think back, I'm sure I hadn't been saying words but I suppose to someone who's never heard English any noise can sound like a word…I had been humming!
"I wasn't saying anything. It was a song," I explain.
"It like Eridian— but bad and wrong."
Of course he thought I was talking. The Eridian language is practically music in itself. Singing is likely the closest I can get to speaking his language. It would be jarring if Rocky had started nearly speaking Human words while we were working so I suppose I can't fault him for his distress.
