Summary
Taking a deep breath, Marjorine leaned deeper into Kyle and let her eyes slide shut. The school heater was working overtime, but even so the majority of warmth she could savor came directly from Kyle’s body.
“Happy Holidays, Ky,” she returned finally, “love ya.”

Summary
Whatever happened, whatever was keeping his parents occupied, the end result was the same. There was something more important to them. A higher priority that Stan couldn't compete with. And as a result he was on the back burner.
It's not the end of the word, though something has irrevocably changed.

Summary
"God," Stan huffed a laugh, "this really doesn't feel real. Does that make sense?" He looked up at Kyle for reassurance. When he didn't agree or disagree, Stan continued, "I mean, I guess it just hasn't. Hit yet, you know? I feel like when I go home he's still gonna be waiting for me at the door or something." Stan shook his head as if dissolving the fantasy from his mind. Sparky wouldn't be waiting behind the wooden door when he got home. He wouldn't have a ball pressed in his teeth, wouldn't have the leash dragged off the wall. Not today, not ever again.

Summary
As much as Stan hated loud noises, bangs booms and crashes, nothing curdled his gut and buzzed beneath his skin quite like silence shared with Kyle.
"Are you mad?" Stan asked, knowing the answer but craving to hear Kyle's voice. A part of Stan was deeply afraid of killing Kyle too, or driving him far enough away for a different kind of death. The kind that can happen between two living people.

Summary
As Kyle drove, Stan casually rest his elbow on the space between them. With each bump, he let it slide closer until their arms were touching. The connection was nice. So nice, in fact, that Stan craved more nearly as immediately as he got some. So he leaned the rest of his body toward Kyle until his head could rest against the bony shoulder.
There, he could hear Kyle deeply inhale, even the air in his lungs tainted by sadness for the whole situation. No one knew Sparky as Stan did, but he supposed the good dog played a role in all their fleeting childhoods.
