Now was Stan's turn to snort. Kyle was ever one for wit. God... what had he been thinking befriending anyone else?
"I don't understand why you got bullied, yanno," blurted Stan. "'Should've been me, not you. You're the confident, clever one. Clearly."
Kyle's forehead scrunched, the creases having embedded themselves there since they were thirteen.
"No, dude. Don't-... don't say shit like that," he scolded gently. Soon he had dumped himself next to Stan, leaning his elbows on his knees, his right hand trailing through his red locks. He bumped Stan's shoulder with a tiny grin. "There's no way I'm cool, what with my track record with girls. I don't expect any chick to have ever found me remotely attractive."
"...How...?" Stan said before he could stop himself. "You look.... fine to me."

Summary
The bottom line is, Stan doesn’t like him like that. This is purely transactional. It’s a win-win, like he’d said in the closet. The more Kyle thinks about it, the simpler it is.
Stan isn’t at any risk of catching feelings; he’s viewing this entire endeavour as a way to get where he needs to be, and being the decent guy he always has been, wants to ensure Kyle gets something out of it too. He’s overthinking this. Making it harder than it has to be. He always does that.
Having fallen out of friendship through one circumstance or another, Stan and Kyle are forced into a closet together, before they can come stumbling out. Literally, then metaphorically.

From what he read, he gathered a couple of things. The author was probably not young, since there's some passages of them complaining how their body wasn't at its prime anymore, and they explored the town, taking notes and occasionally fighting supernatural creatures. Kyle didn't know if it was supposed to be a fiction story or the person was just crazy, but it didn't make it any less enticing.

FUCK!” She pulled at her long hair and yelled some more. “FUCK FUCK FUCK!” She punched the time machine, only succeeding in bruising her knuckles, which healed immediately. She continued to yell and scream her lungs out while kicking and punching around the large crater the time machine made in the woods. it did nothing to ease the growing anger in her chest.
“You done?” Comet asked, leaning back against The Sphere to watch his friend have a breakdown. He knew that the best way to handle his friend when she got this angry, which wasn’t often, was to let her calm herself down.
“AS A MATTER OF FACT, I AM NOT COMET!” She yelled back, stopping her pacing to yell at her best friend. “BECAUSE WE ARE STRANDED IN THE PAST, WITH NO INDICATION OF WHAT YEAR IT IS!”
“It’s October 10th, 2025,” Nessa called from inside The Sphere. “Means our parents would be in junior year.”
