“Oh, what now?” Dustin snaps, and Steve can just hear the eye-roll. He pointedly does not see it, because if he looks at the kid’s face with its fucking split lip and black eye, he’s just going to get pissed all over again, and that hasn’t exactly been helping with anything so far.
Steve grits his teeth, continues to stare at the ground as they walk, pretending it’s to make sure he doesn’t trip. “Nothing, we’re good.”
“Right,” Dustin says, so dryly that Steve wonders if he’ll ever hear any other tone besides that and anger from him. “We’re so good you won’t even look at me.”
Something snaps in Steve’s gut, that red-hot rage that’s been sitting there since Dustin showed up hours ago looking like a punching bag. “Oh, I’m surprised you care,” he said. “You’ve made it pretty clear you don’t give a shit about what I have to say.”

Tonight was one of those nights, and he took the bottom edges of his flannel and clenched his fists around them so they would stop shaking. He blasted Green Day, trying to ignore the vibrations of shouts and slamming doors through the wall. He closed his eyes, imagining he was somewhere else - practicing with his friends, playing a real concert venue, going on tour and performing with Billie Joe Armstrong.
Anywhere but here.

Summary
He couldn’t even focus on music, which was supposed to be the one thing that he could lose himself in.
His fingers moved automatically, his hands gliding along the strings of his bass like they always did, but his mind was entirely elsewhere. All he saw was the stupid bike shack, the stamp on his wrist, Alex’s heartbroken expression when he and Willie had their strange not-a-break-up, the jolts shocking through his friends, even his parents arguing, which somehow feels both so long ago and still so fresh. Most of all, it’s the giant, looming, vague end that has no shape but he knows is coming.
(AKA: Reggie has abandonment issues and is positive that everything will inevitably be taken away from him.

The Legos, those didn’t fit, they were wobbly and they fell over and over, and they were still frustrating. But the music - the music was solid and steady, and at this point, Reggie was pretty sure he wasn’t the only one keeping an eye on that and everything else. It wasn’t just him waiting to scramble in making sure things were okay - now, Alex and Luke were there, too. They were standing guard, building him up and making sure that he stayed safe.
(Or: Reggie deals with the frustrations of undiagnosed learning disabilities and parents one fight away from a divorce. Luckily, life has much more to offer.)

Crowley’s dark nails scrape at floorboards as he tries to climb to his feet, smoke choking him. Splinters surely find their way into his fingers, but he doesn’t care, can’t care, as he tries to call out. His voice feels raw, trying to push through a throat and mouth full of embers. He barely pushes himself up to his knees, his feet, while his eyes burn.
“Aziraphale? Aziraphale!” His gasps burn, his hands screaming as he collapses against a bookshelf. He whispers, “Aziraphale, please…”
He shuts his eyes, looking, aching, for any sign of his angel, but he can’t. He’s always, always been able to sense him, at least a slight shimmer somewhere in the far reaches of his mind, but there’s nothing.
He has nothing.
God, shit, he was right, it was over, and Aziraphale was gone, there wasn’t--
“Crowley?”

The door slams open, bouncing off what is presumably an AIM agent. Clint immediately darts around the door, using Barnes’s arm as cover. He grabs the gun off the agent, along with a couple clips and a knife. With a flick of the wrist, he flings the blade and it hits the other agent in his chest, dead-center.

It wasn’t like Tony wasn’t used to it. He had years and years of experience in being ignored. Hell, he’d grown up with Howard and Maria Stark as his parents. He couldn’t even begin to count the number of times his six-year-old self had been dismissed from Howard’s presence, even when he’d been bouncing up and down with obvious excitement. And Maria-- well, Maria was always so busy. She’d give an absent ‘mm-hm’ every once in a while, but even those were rare compared to the complete apathy he usually got.
So this. He was used to this. And hey, at least he wasn’t getting hit this time around.
