Summary
“Nice try,” Seungcheol says.
The familiar voice causes Jihoon to stop kicking in the air for his freedom. He knows that won’t work with this guy. “You still work for the band?”
Seungcheol laughs, “Yeah, there’s job security when I can count on you to be around. Didn’t your stint in jail last year teach you anything?”
“It was two nights in a holding cell! A glorified warning!” Jihoon whines defiantly.

Summary
“Move this one to my chambers,” the king says. His fingers curve around Jihoon’s jaw, tilting his head up again. Jihoon sees a glint of silver in the king’s eyes, blown wide with something unknown but wild, and makes a confused noise. “Give him whatever he wants to nest.”
For a moment, the king stares, lips slightly parted, and Jihoon feels panicked. Like the rabbits he’s hunted, Jihoon is small and afraid of something larger that wishes to devour him. Then Jihoon blinks, and the spell breaks. Hand falling away, the king leaves, and Jihoon’s ushered through the castle to the most ornate room he’s ever seen. It feels larger than his entire village, the bed in the center of the room as big as Jihoon’s whole cottage. Faced with it, Jihoon can only think that his oncoming heat must have made him delirious.
It isn’t possible for the king to have chosen him.

Summary
Jihoon felt the hairs on his arms prickle again. He forced a small, awkward laugh, trying to push aside the unease. “I’ve been too busy with my work,” he admitted, fingers tightening slightly around his fork. “Traveling, painting, there hasn’t been much time to… see anyone.”
The Count tilted his head, the faint smile still lingering on his lips. “No lover, then?”
Jihoon swallowed, his throat dry despite the wine. He shook his head once more, the motion small, almost embarrassed. “No. My work has been everything to me.”
The Count leaned back in his chair, studying him as though Jihoon had just confirmed some unspoken suspicion. The silence stretched, broken only by the crackling of the fire. Jihoon felt his pulse racing, though he could not understand why a simple conversation about his personal life made him feel as though something far greater was at stake.
At last, the Count lifted his glass and swirled the wine within it, his gaze fixed on the crimson liquid. “How fortunate,” he said softly, almost to himself. “A man free of attachments.”
