“But Father says I’m growing too slow,” he responds, pouting his lips.
“Your father is a man of stone; he has no sentiment for these things. You’re my baby boy, so you need to stay small forever.” I pull him close in a hug, and he tries to resist despite the grin on his face. He is in a good mood today, laughter bubbling up from easy smiles; he’s probably still proud of his cooking earlier. I want us to stay like this forever. “If you keep getting bigger, then you’re going to be the one taking care of me, instead of the other way around. What am I supposed to do then?”
“You’ll just get to eat my food all day,” he says. “And one day I’ll cook something so delicious it’ll make you get better!”

“Set your heart ablaze.” Wasn’t that what he always told his subordinates? Yet, had he ever set his own heart ablaze? He must’ve at some point, otherwise he wouldn’t be where he is now. But right now he can’t even remember what it felt like. The flame went out at some point along the way and he didn’t even notice. That’s why he couldn’t beat Akaza. Set your heart ablaze. Rise again like a phoenix within the flames. It’s not over yet.
Kyojuro fought Akaza the night of the Mugen train incident and he survives. With severe injuries and little strength left, he's left with his thoughts (eek). After several encounters, following epiphanies, and a demon battle, he remembers why he's fighting. All brought to an end with a long overdue family reunion.
