Gem Grim is so, so screwed.
Three months in, and she’s already running out of funds. Her little nest egg stolen from Grim House lasted long enough that the commotion over her disappearance has blown over, but she still sometimes sees her picture on soggy missing posters on the outskirts of town. She’s been able to find a minimum-wage job at a dollar store, but that doesn’t pay the rent. Not in this economy, anyways.

She feels different. Stronger. She yelps when she looks in the mirror, because instead of a flesh-and-blood Gem there is a flesh-and-blood-and-metal Gem.

“Gem!” FWhip called out. “Gem, it’s me, FWhip!”
“I– get away from me!” Gem shouted, and FWhip was surprised by her new clothes. She looked different in corduroy overalls and a long-sleeved, pastel green shirt, and her hair was shorter. “You’re a pillager, why are you here?”
“I’m your brother, Gem!” FWhip said desperately. When Gem turned and ran, he raced after her, and grabbed her sleeve, trying to stop her. “We’re siblings!”
“Help!” Gem cried, and FWhip was too distracted to see the two golems heading his way. A hard iron arm hit him, throwing him up into the air and away from Gem. His head hurt from the impact– the soft terrain had absorbed some of the damage but his mind was reeling at the fact that Gem didn’t recognize him and that she was some sort of villager and apparently he was a pillager, the villagers’ worst enemy.
