“Woah! Hey Buck… it’s just me!” Ravi responded with a wavering tone, still in a bit of disbelief at the other man’s state. Eddie looked down at the crimson smear across his vest, sticky on his fingers from where he’d checked the paint.

    Oh.

The red did look a lot like blood.

    OR

The 118 gets a call to a paintball arena. Things derail quickly when Eddie gets shot by one of the players with a paintball gun.

    Summary

Eddie Diaz doesn’t notice it at first. The way his chest tightens when Buck throws himself into danger. The way his eyes linger a little too long on Buck’s smile—or worse, on the way his uniform pants fit.

Buck, of course, notices nothing. He’s too busy being Buck: all wide grins, reckless bravery, and unwavering loyalty.

But with every close call, every brush of shoulders, every laugh that lingers longer than it should, Eddie finds it harder to deny the truth pressing at the edges of his heart.

Because somewhere between the firehouse, the late-night beers, and the patching-up after calls… Eddie Diaz is falling in love with his best friend.

    And Buck has no idea.

    Summary

“Eddie,” Buck says, feeling on the verge of hysteria. “It’s kind of a personal thing.”

“Well— yeah,” Eddie says. “If you’re doing it for sex. But that’s not what you’re doing. Right?”

Buck thinks about that for a moment. “I- I guess not?”

“Okay,” Eddie says, nodding. “So— it’s not any different than anything else we do to help each other then, right?”

“I—” Buck tilts his head. “I don’t know. Isn’t it?”

    — in which buck and eddie slowly come to the conclusion that getting each other off for pain relief is just one of the many totally normal, platonic things they do together.

    Summary

Eddie is 8 years old sitting along the stiff and uncomfortable pews of his church during Sunday mass.

Stain glass windows stream in warm colorful light against his skin. His back pushes into the hard wood, and his small body's weight presses against the thin cushion lining the pew. His feet can't even touch the ground. He swings his legs lightly as he folds the pages of this week's bulletin into different shapes. Helena had already scolded him to pay attention to the sermon a few times but gives up in favor of letting Eddie quietly fidget to himself.

The boisterous voice of their priest thrums through Eddie's mind, with each crease and fold of the paper he resists any effort to make sense of the words the congregation mumbles in agreement with. He’s heard this sermon before, the odd names of books and verses ring familiar in his ears.

Eddie is 32 when his catholic upbringing comes back to haunt him.

Eddie is 33 years old when his gay crisis begins.

    Summary

The first time he sets foot inside of a Church after he moves is when Shannon dies. He carries her coffin to the altar and doesn’t cry.

The second time is years later, when Buck gets struck down from the ladder by lightning, stops breathing for three minutes and seventeen seconds and Eddie performs CPR the whole way to the hospital. He tries to breathe life back into Buck’s body, and silently prays to a God he’s sure has forgotten and abandoned him. He cracks Buck’s ribs trying to get his heart pumping again, and when it does, Eddie cries.

The third time Eddie steps inside of a church it’s three pm on a Thursday and he has the day off. Buck is out with Tommy somewhere and can’t hang out, and Eddie can’t help the feeling of jealousy that runs through him like a wave. Even though Buck has been always at least three feet from Eddie for the past three days.

The third time he walks into the 'house of God', it’s four days after his parents came all the way from El Paso to take Christopher.

(or, chris leaves and eddie deals with all the things religion, grief and buck)
