“Fuck off,” the kid immediately snarls, teeth bared like a wild animal. Grime covers most of his body, along with a patchwork of discolored skin - no shirt, no shoes, only a ragged pair of shorts, which means Rayleigh can see every spot where someone smacked the boy around, can see the obvious rope burns around his wrists and ankles. Tear tracks cut across each freckled cheek, framed by lank dark hair, matted with tangles and blood.
All of it would be heart-wrenching enough, but Rayleigh only needs one look at the grey eyes glaring at him to feel his heart break.
The rumors could have been wrong. Someone could have lied, produced a fake to pass off as the genuine article. But Rayleigh sailed with his captain for decades, and those? Those are Roger’s eyes. No question.
