"what do you need, baby," eddie asks, voice low and steady, hand just cupping steve's neck now, letting him gather his thoughts. steve takes his time, rubbing his nose against eddie's thigh and breathing deep. he can smell eddie's body wash through his pajamas, underneath their laundry detergent, knows he must have showered before sitting down to read and wait for steve to come home. he presses his nose deeper, really pulls eddie's scent in, and makes up his mind.

they’ve managed to keep this thing between them a secret for months: meeting up after work, eddie staying to help clean up after movie nights or after his hellfire sessions are done for the day, steve stopping by the munsons’ new government issued trailer to “drop off” whatever dungeons and dorks thing the kids have left and staying to make small talk until wayne has left for his overnight. it’s still new, fragile, something they both want to last and don’t want scrutiny on right now. whatever they started building during that terrible spring break, whatever they almost lost when eddie played hero, it’s flourishing, soft and warm, between them.

All in all, Steve was taking the whole thing in "a scary amount of stride," at least according to Robin. In truth, he just didn’t get what the big deal was.
Sure, getting hit with a cloud of spores from some weird Upside Down vines that had wormed their way into Hawkins and immediately being transformed into a girl wasn’t ideal, but it was hardly the worst thing that had happened to any of them in the past couple years.
The only thing he’d really been worried about...was Eddie.
