Summary
This side of Alhaitham — warm, gentle, vulnerable — was concealed from most. Perhaps only Kaveh was privy to just how human Sumeru’s famed “machine-like genius” truly was when stripped of his reticence and silence. In the streets of the city and within the walls of the Akademiya, he was always furtively observing and analysing others while hiding the mechanisms of his own mind; in the intimacy of their home however, he let his emotions and finicky character show through without fear that they would be misinterpreted.
It almost made Kaveh feel like a good person to see Alhaitham at ease with him.
“Come,” Alhaitham called, pulling gently on his hand. “I’ll show you how beautiful you are.”
Or: Kaveh hates his reflection in the mirror. Alhaitham demonstrates just how much he disagrees with that opinion.

Weddings in Sumeru have never been a small affair. But to purchase land on Pardis Dhyai, and build upon it a permanent fixture that would outlast even the lives of the couple themselves; to hire him as the architect to do it—frankly, the bride must be wealthy enough to buy half of Sumeru City and all its goods. She might even be wealthy enough to buy Kaveh himself, from the strands of his hair down to his trimmed architect’s nails. Kaveh tries to imagine such wealth, and he shivers, frightened the way a starved man might fear the apple’s sweetness.
However, fear is only a fuel for imagination in Kaveh’s case. A wealthy client, especially a patron of the arts, means a generous salary, and (hopefully) unfettered artistic freedom.
It is almost a fact of life that Kaveh will end up taking on more work than he had bargained for. This, however, truly takes the cake.

He flips another page. He hopes Kaveh is too drunk to realize he’s not reading. “You just told me about your escapades. Am I to believe you’re secretly a virgin?”
“No, that’s not what I mean. I haven’t had good sex in… I don’t know how long. It’s all just… fucking. I want something deeper than that. I want someone to make love to me. Is that so hard?”
There are a lot of things Alhaitham could say to this. Something snarky; something supportive. He weighs his options.
But maybe Kaveh’s alcohol laden breath is infecting Alhaitham’s head, too, because what he says is a very cryptic, “Maybe you’re not looking in the right place.”
