Summary
Jack knows what it feels like when the world is ending.
The world has ended for Jack Abbot a dozen times over, and the sun still insisted on rising the next day, illuminating the city skyline, warming his tired face, and bringing in a new wave of patients.
That’s the only reason why, when he gets the phone call from Dana, he doesn’t immediately fall apart. He rolls out of bed, pulls on his leg, and returns to the emergency department that he left only four hours ago.
The first words out of Dana’s mouth are "She’s stable", god bless her.
“Where is she.”
“South twenty.”

Summary
And sitting next to him now, Samira comes to terms with the devastating awareness that after years of shoving her sexuality aside to focus on the work, after so many overlapping shifts, after numerous overseen procedures, that the work has shoved back with a reassuring nod and a gruff compliment, her defenses evaporating in an instant.

Summary
“He ran.” Samira says eventually, leaning her head back against the lockers. Her voice is small in a way that she thought she’d outgrown, unlearned somewhere between the start of her residency and the realisation that it doesn’t actually matter what Robby thinks. It’s all she can do to keep the tears out of her voice; cannot bring herself to pretend that everything is going to be alright, “I told him I was pregnant, and he ran.”
