"N. T. F. B. S., Aventurine," Ryoshu said. Her sword was steady in her hand. "What do you know about Oswaldo Schneider?"

"Do I look like I would willingly pass on information about a fellow coworker to someone who looks like they want his head chopped off?" Aventurine tilted her head away from the sword, long brown hair falling to the side.

In this Mirror World, Ryoshu assumes the identity of a Galaxy Ranger. Rodion assumes the identity of a Stoneheart of the IPC.

[ This was what Koyuki reminded Hakuji of:

That summer they first met as children, the first time they ate dinner together, the soba cold and slick on their tongues. The first punch he threw, not in defense, but as a practice, as he was now, and forever will be, Keizo’s chosen student. Where Koyuki would stay shaded in the house, Hakuji would perch on the porch as he watched over her, and do you remember how nice it felt, Hakuji? The sun—do you remember how it kissed your skin, how it dried your wet clothes and made the garden shine golden and brought life onto the flowers? Do you remember how you carried me upon your back, in those early days when I was the weakest, just so I could have a taste of it, too?

Those books I read to you, of daring swordfights in far-off lands, of epic romances and true love and kisses that were strong enough to break any curse—do you remember how it goes, Hakuji? You used to act indifferent whenever I got to the happy ending, but do you honestly think that I couldn’t see how your cheeks reddened, how the blush spread to the tip of your ears? Even my father knew how much of a romantic you are, Hakuji—the kindest boy he’s ever met, he said. Did you know that, Hakuji? Did you know how fond he was of you, how happy he was to have you? Hakuji, did you know that his last words had been a prayer for you?

Hakuji. Do you remember the fireworks? Do you remember your last promises, Hakuji? Do you know that there is one that you still get to fulfil?

    Hakuji

    Hakuji, Hakuji.

    My Hakuji.

Do you know that I would take the sickness and the pain tenfold if I got to have you again? ]

“What do you plan to do now, Insect Hashira?” Giyuu wondered.

[ “Why did she tell you ?” Giyuu asked back.

“No idea.” Sanemi murmured. “She said it was top secret, so very few people were supposed to know, but I’m pretty sure all the hashira knew. I sorta assumed you did too.

Giyuu tightened his lips. Shinobu had offhandedly told him she hated the scent of wisteria. He could always smell it around her, like a toxic gas. Kanae liked the smell of wisteria, and once Giyuu had met her again a couple weeks later, with Kanae’s haori, Kanae’s quirks, Kanae’s personality, Kanae’s smile, he thought the scent was the same deal.

Who would have guessed she had thirty-seven kilograms of poison running through her veins?

How many people had Shinobu told? Why was Giyuu left out? He could’ve stopped her, and her suicidal journey. She still had a chance to settle down or get married, live out a good life. Why had she become so obsessed with vengeance for her sister?

    Oh. He could’ve stopped her.

None of the other hashira had. Shinobu had also been excellent at reading people, so she must’ve figured out earlier that none of them would stop her. But she knew that Giyuu would have tried. ]

Augusta and Iuno leave behind the weight of prophecy and command to wander through a city unlike any they have ever known. Ragunna’s shimmering canals, flower-laden bridges, and sunlit piazzas offer them more than beauty - they offer the dangerous taste of peace.

Note: This story serves as the closing chapter of my series, 'The Hunt of Sanguis Plateaus'. You may want to read that first for the full journey - though it isn’t strictly necessary to enjoy this piece on its own.

[ “I could live here,” Augusta repeated. The words came easier this time. “I could be only Augusta. No crown. No oaths made on the steps of a temple. Only… this.” She glanced down to where their knees touched. “Only us.”

Iuno’s fingers sought Augusta’s hand and found it. Their palms pressed together; their fingers laced. The fit felt inevitable, the way a blade finds its scabbard. “A day may come when we choose that,” Iuno said. “I do not know that the gods would approve. But I have learned, at last, that my heart is not theirs to command.”

“And what if the city calls again?” Augusta asked. Not as a challenge; as a confession. “What if the Plateaus roar tomorrow? I do not know how to be anything but the one who goes. I don’t know how to walk away.”

Iuno turned their joined hands and kissed the place where Augusta’s thumb met her palm. The warrior flinched - not from pain, but from the avalanche of tenderness such a small act unstopped. “Then do what you have always done,” Iuno said, voice barely a breath. “Go. But go for the living, not for glory. And come back, not for the city first, but for me.” ]

    Summary

The first time Hashirama sees the Hiraishin in action, he hardly knows what it means, let alone what it is. Tobirama tries to explain, but all Hashirama knows is that his brother is there one moment and gone the next, more elusive than the smell of petrichor during Fire Country's summer season. Still, Hashirama is nothing but resilient like the trees he so easily bends to his will, and there is something important in the little kunai and its seal.

Or, a snapshot of Hashirama and Tobirama's relationship through the creation and founding of Konohagakure told by the Hiraishin.

[ There is something in the river, Hashirama realizes. There is something in the river and it has hair the color of moonlight and the fingers of an artist if they were not so calloused and blood, so much blood, vibrant and scarlet and spreading through the water, and its face is half-hidden under the water but Hashirama — Hashirama knows the curve of its nose, the fan of its pale lashes, the start of its cheekbone, has memorized them ever since the wild Hatake woman had clawed at his shoulders as Father’s baby came too-fast and too-hard and too-big between her shaking legs, Hashirama’s hands reaching for it as it fell, the pulse of freshwater–new moon–hello settling into his bones at the touch, waking up the part of him that is sunlight–strong bark–life that had rested dormant for centuries in his body. Mother had tried to take it from Hashirama, had raved about bloodlines and bastards and bitches, but Hashirama loved it and the Hatake woman called it —

Hashirama is in the river before he even realizes it, already shoving his hands into the water to catch Father’s baby again, to pull him up and keep him close because those are Tobirama’s curls and Tobirama’s hands and Tobirama’s face and Tobirama’s blood. It is Tobirama, and Hashirama loves him. ]

    ---

[ “Get out,” he says, and everything wooden in the house tilts, listening. “Don’t you come near him.”

    “Hashirama, you must accept —”

“Out!” He roars the word and they flee — cowards, he can hear Tobirama mutter, can’t we get new ones, anija? — but he hates how much he sounds like Butsuma when he does. His daughter seems to agree. She wakes, screaming, in her nursery, and with clumsy hands, he tries to calm her. Mito appears in the doorway, and Hashirama holds their child out to her.

“I didn’t mean to,” he says.

“Hashirama,” Mito breathes, coming closer, and her hands are cool when they touch his face; her fingertips come away wet. “Oh, my husband.”

    “I didn’t mean to hurt —”

She kisses him gently, deliberately, and simply Mito, and it breaks him. Hashirama cries loud enough to put his daughter to shame, ugly and heaving, and it feels like bark twisting away, like the crack of branches and the triumph of broken roots, and he cannot breathe. Mito slides her hand over his chest, petting him, and she tips her head into his jaw. His nose fills with her perfume, and he clutches at her hard enough to bruise, careful of the tender line of their daughter still stuck in his arm.

“They’re fine. They’ll both be fine,” she murmurs to him, over and over and over again until the words sink straight into his heart. “You aren’t your father, and she isn’t Kawarama. Tobirama isn’t Itama.”

    “I was — I was so —”

His words catch in his throat.

    “Scared?”

Hashirama closes his eyes, ashamed. Shinobi do not cry. Senju do not cry, and yet here he is, his war-grown body too big for his peace-made house. ]

[ …Phainon’s raving sure doesn’t seem like raving anymore. Mydei looks at him again, analyzing him with this new information in mind, but all he can see is Phainon: hurt by ages Mydei has not lived and does not know, holding himself stiffly as if bracing for a blow he is so sure will come.

What a fool, as always. If there is anyone, anyone at all, who would understand the necessity of death to reach a goal sometimes, even at the cost of precious life, it would be Mydeimos. Mydeimos, the Undying. Mydeimos, ruler of a people forever slaughtering and being slaughtered for their creed. Mydei, who even if he hadn’t understood, would still have believed the Deliverer would always mean well, even with a thousand lifetimes between them. He has more faith in him than that.

People change, it’s true. Despair twists and defaces, but despair is a circumstance, not a characteristic.

He pulls Phainon towards him, and hears his breath hitch as he ever so gently puts their foreheads together, eyes closed. “HKS. Do you think it’s that easy to get rid of me? You’ll have to do better.”

And Phainon laughs wetly, a little disbelievingly, but he melts against Mydei as he hasn’t done for days now, and clutches at his arms like he never wants to let go again.

And he thinks of Phainon saying, I wanted to remember what it was like, to remember what it was like to be loved, and his heart breaks. ]
