Summary
It’s the same Joel and it isn’t - still rough around the edges with strangers and slow drawl and she still manages to sneak up on him from his right side - but he’s changed since Colorado and Utah and everything that happened in between. Ellie would almost be tempted to joke that penicillin made him nicer, but she knows it has more to do with finding her monosyllabic and covered in blood and trying to fix it because that’s what Joel does, he fixes things.
Joel fixes the light in the dining room, the drain in the sink, and she tries not to think of what his version of fixing things would’ve been in the hospital, hates that she knows he was probably lying and hates that she knows she won’t call him out on it. Right now, he’s fixing an old window air conditioning unit because otherwise she’s taken to threatening to sleep in the river if she has to try to sleep in 90 degree heat because the ancient central air of the house can’t keep up.

Joel doesn’t really know what he expected to happen when he finally delivered Ellie to the Firefly hospital.
To be completely frank, he didn’t actually expect to make it to the hospital at all, so the fact that he managed to get them both here without being bitten or brutally murdered is something of a pleasant surprise.

He takes her out of the hospital on Sarah’s birthday as much for his own sake as for hers. Even miserable and sick from playing medical mystery, she’s intuitive, and he feels her watching him as the day approaches. She doesn’t ask, too aware of all of the painful spots he hasn’t told her about, but she presses closer to him in a way that feels like she’s doing it more for him than for her.
They had gone looking for the giraffes originally. They roam as they want, but they tend to stick near the old zoo where there's still a stable for them to shelter in. He hadn’t wanted to wander too far for Ellie’s sake, fresh out of a trial of yet another failed drug. She’s leaning on him pretty heavily today, dizzy from blood draws and the lingering after-effects of the medication, and she’s frustrated with herself that she keeps needing breaks. She’s an energetic kid, and he knows the physical weakness grinds her down as much as the pain, forcing her to stop them every few minutes to catch her breath.
Then he sees a bright painted wing on a building.
“Hey,” he says, and she looks up at him, face tight with pain and frustration both. He nods his head to the building. “You like butterflies?”
