Summary
Shane and Ilya broke up. It was the adult, mature decision they made together and moved on from. Except Shane is still Ilya's emergency contact and Ilya's coach just called.
Ilya had a seizure. Well, seizures. Multiple. He is in the hospital, in the operation block and suddenly Shane is met with the possibility that last words Ilya Rozanov ever heard from him were "Maybe love isn't enough."
And then complications occur. And Ilya is not waking up.

They’d sat on a perfectly ordinary Wednesday afternoon in their perfectly ordinary kitchen, with coffee that had gone cold on the table between them, and calmly dismantled the life they’d built together. One sentence at a time.
“Maybe we need space.” “Maybe we’re just hurting each other.” “Maybe love isn’t enough.”
He wants to go back and shove that version of himself against the wall. Shake him until his teeth rattle.
Love is the only thing that matters when someone is under general anaesthesia and a stranger is touching their brain, Shane thinks wildly. Love is literally the only currency worth anything in a room like this.

“Oh my god, Rozanov, it was your last day being 22, that’s what you meant earlier!”
“Da, you caught me. So… I should make a wish, no?”
“I’m sorry, I… I kinda wish I had a present for you now.”
Rozanov shakes his head. “No, Hollander, come on, this is stupid.”
“It’s not. And yeah, you should make a wish.”
“I don’t know what to wish for.”
Shane clicks his tongue. “Is this your way of rubbing your Stanley Cup in my face? And the MVP award? Or just bragging about having everything you want?”
Rozanov’s eyes drop, more seriously than Shane expected, before looking up again. “Not everything I want.”

OR: Shane and Ilya both stay in Las Vegas for another day and a half after the MLH awards in 2014. Coincidentally, it’s Ilya’s birthday, and he secretly wishes for a kiss from Shane. Will the birthday gods grant his wish?

Summary
(Chapter 1) What if Cliff Marlow, after Ilya came back from visiting Shane in the hospital, put his detective cap on and sleuthed out more than Ilya was prepared for?
(Chapter 2) Perhaps Ilya, in bed with Shane at his cottage months later, finally shares this detail with him. Which perhaps encourages other unspoken details to be shared, and some fantasizing about who else they would like to tell. On purpose this time.
(Chapter 3, 4 and upcoming 5) Perhaps the late night fantasizing snowballs into an actual plan. A labour day weekend party where they surprise everyone that matters to them (Marlow is also invited). For better and for worse.
