“I’m coming to the cottage.”
Shane remembers the words, the urgency in Ilya’s voice, the decision being made. He also remembers how unsure he himself had suddenly felt. Because while Shane wanted Ilya to come with him to the cottage, show him his own private sanctuary, he couldn’t recall actually inviting him.
Or: While driving to the cottage together, Shane tries to remember how they got there.

Summary
“I… I like you.”
Matteo thinks he might have chosen one of the worst times possible to admit this. He’s been sweating for the last twenty minutes of their car ride, due to the July heat and the broken air conditioning in Jonas’ car.
And David just sits there next to him in the back seat, with slightly unruly curls and a pearl of sweat right above his upper lip that’s enough to make Matteo’s throat go dry, staring at him.
Or: Matteo confesses his feelings for David right before they're going on a one-day hike.

Summary
After things go down both in school and at home, David finds himself at Laura's, not having anywhere else to go. He ends up at a new school, with a plan to be unknown. A plan that crashes to the ground as soon as he sees Matteo.
There is something wrong with Matteo's brain, and instead of figuring out what it is, Matteo looks for escape anywhere he can - video games, drugs, sleeping for days. Then, he meets David, and something inside of him wakes up.

Summary
At first, Matteo manages to convince himself that it’s fine. He knows just how much David has on his mind lately, trying to excel in everything he does, and even though it stings it makes sense that he’d forget about one or two things amidst it all. And he still excels at being a boyfriend, as well - every morning still comes with a soft kiss gently gracing Matteo’s cheek, making him smile as he slowly wakes up to the sound of David getting ready, and when he’s not too tired, he even drags himself out of bed to steal some of the coffee David has made for himself before rushing off to uni.
And yet, when Thursday morning finds its way below his closed eyelids, making them slowly flutter open, Matteo’s heart sinks.
For the prompt: David accidentally stood Matteo up on an important day (maybe anniversary?) and just forgot about it because he was out with a few new friends. And Matteo is hurt but not mad because that happens but then he wonders if that maybe happened because he is not as important to David as David is to him?

Summary
Matteo notices how the pressure is wearing down on David, how much he's hurting, and tries to make it better. Instead, they end up fighting.
For the prompt: David and Matteo have a fight and Davids run away (as he does) and Matteo is so hurt by that, thought they are able to work through that now and David regrets it in the same moment, but he just needed to get away. Both are not reaching out at first, both can't sleep and all without the other and then David apologizes. And they talk through it? Like communication and deep deep love?

Summary
Even before he played his first NHL game, Ilya expected his career would involve bearing the brunt of some dislike. Hockey was entertainment, a spectacle; somebody had to play the heel. He didn’t mind that. He didn’t expect people to dislike Hollander.

A squawk, followed by an incensed, “Jesus! It’s Hayden! Hayden Pike! Shane’s best friend? A guy you’ve played against for years?”
Oh. This is… not good.
Ilya very slowly lowers himself down on the bed, spine straight. “Why are you calling?”
Pike huffs. “Trust me, I don’t want to be.”
“Okay, then, why? How do you know… Lily?”
A beat. Then, “You’re Lily.”
Protectiveness rears its ugly head. Severely, Ilya declares, “This is none of your fucking concern.”
“He’s asking for you.”
OR: when Shane gets hurt on the ice, Hayden Pike reaches out to Boston Lily.

“You broke up with her,” Ilya says, arms loosening against his chest.
“No, she, uh—” Shane ducks his head, avoiding Ilya’s eyes. “We slept together. And she kind of … she didn’t confront me, I guess. But she talked to me. Kind of hinted that she thought I might not be…”
“Into girls?” Ilya finishes for him.
“Something like that.”
“You denied it?”
“No, I— I told her. About me. About—us,” Shane’s head snaps up, a hand lifted in Ilya’s direction. “Not about us, us. That I’d been sleeping with someone. Another player. I didn’t tell her about you.”
OR: Shane comes out to Rose and runs toward the safest pair of arms he knows: Ilya’s.

“So,” Ilya says, dragging the word out. He’s swiping at non-existent crumbs on the counter, avoiding his eyes. “You have dinner at parents on Christmas, yes?”
“Yeah.”
Ilya nods. “I can house-sit while you are away. Make place pretty, if you have decorations. Make it less boring.”
Shane’s eyebrows fly up. “What? You don’t want to come with?”
Finally, Ilya looks up at him. Hesitantly, he asks, “You want me to come with?”
Frowning, Shane says, “I– yeah. Yeah, of course. You think I invited you here just so you could spend Christmas alone?”
Looking away, Ilya shrugs. “I am intruder here, Hollander. You have family. I do not. Makes situation… difficult, maybe. You forget the world thinks we are rivals.”
“Not difficult,” Shane says immediately. “You want to come, you’re coming.”
Or: Ilya's in Montreal alone during the week leading up to the Winter Classic. Shane doesn't let him spend Christmas alone.

Summary
From across the rink, Shane watches Ilya get punched in the face.
He keeps a distance from the mess playing out. He knows better than to go over and make it worse. He would be more worried about it if Ilya wasn’t laughing with blood running down his face as one of his teammates drags him away. He’s yelling at the player that punched him, and Shane is grateful he can’t hear what he’s saying because he knows it’s obscene.
“Your boy is feral tonight,” Pike says to Shane.
Shane groans. “He's not my boy.”When Shane is in junior high, Ilya's family moves to Canada. Instead of meeting as adults, they grow up together. Shane learns Russian and Ilya spends a majority of his time at the Hollander household. When they start their professional hockey careers, they have to learn how to be opponents instead of teammates, but also how to be apart for the first time in their lives. When Ilya suggests that they sleep together, Shane has to balance their friendship and their casual relationship.
