Summary
“Mr. and Mrs. Langdon?” she calls.
The couple’s heads swivel in unison until they land on her, and the woman’s anxious expression drops into a frown. It’s not quite the reaction Mel is expecting, but she is a stranger. She doesn’t know what Frank has told them about her, if he’s shown them her picture or anything. They’re probably just wondering how she knows who they are.
“Hi.” She sticks out her hand for the man to shake. “I’m Dr. Melissa King. I’m a… friend of Frank’s. I can get you your visitor’s passes and take you back to see him…”
Mr. Langdon gives her hand a perfunctory shake. But when Mel turns to his wife, she just looks Mel up and down, her lips pressed into a thin line, as Mel stands there, toes curling up tight inside her sneakers and her shoulders creeping up to her ears.
“Oh, we know who you are,” Frank’s mom says, voice loud enough to carry over the din of the waiting room. “You’re the whore who stole our son away from the mother of his children.”

“Mel,” he says slowly, “if I texted you during a shift and said you are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met, what would you do?”
I don’t know if I mean to give him a physical display of my answer, but I fall forward on my elbows, nearly knocking over my tea.
“Right,” he says. “So that’s issue number one.”
OR
After a small misunderstanding, Mel tells a lie she can’t take back, and now she has Langdon in her phone pretending to be her imaginary boyfriend. Maybe it would have been easier to just date the IT guy.

Frank doesn’t know it, but he falls in love with Mel the day they meet. Thirteen minutes after his fight with Robby, he breaks down in his car, sobbing so hard that his heart breaks. He checks himself into rehab but relapses on December 26th. He goes back in four days later and stays for 90 grueling, shameful days.
Abby and his kids die on a Thursday, two and a half weeks before he returns to The PItt.
