Lately, Alhaitham was suffering from a problem.
It wasn't a problem that affected his life in a negative way, no. Instead, it plagued his mind at every waking moment possible, and especially around his rowdy, messy roommate.
Apparently, after some research, his symptoms directed him to something called cuteness aggression. He kept having the urge to pinch, squeeze or even bite Kaveh. These weren't the violent kind, but Kaveh definitely wouldn't take these as acts of kindness.

Kaveh knows his words are likely slurred from alcohol but is imperative in this moment that Alhaitham knows how beautiful he is.
A surprising warmth spreads through Kaveh’s body when he takes in how Alhaitham’s eyes widen, gold pupils dilating.
It makes him want to draw Alhaitham again and again until his entire sketchbook is filled with nothing but this specific man he hardly knows.
Before they were roommates, Alhaitham attended Kaveh's thesis defense. Kaveh gets drunk and leaves an impression that lasts years.

Summary
Kaveh used to think that Alhaitham had mastered the art of ignoring him. The man would remain unflappable as he continued to read his worn copy of The Origins of Enkanomiyan Language, even when Kaveh was a hair’s breadth away from shattering the windows of their house with his severity of pitch.
No amount of screaming, threats to throw things, or violently waving in front of him could get Alhaitham to pause in his thirst for knowledge. As it turns out, Alhaitham literally just turns his hearing aids off so he doesn’t have to listen to Kaveh.
It’s for this exact reason that Kaveh has decided to learn Sumerian Sign Language.

"That sounds more like love to me," Lambad says nonchalantly.
Kaveh points at him accusingly. "It is not love, it is turmoil. I am in turmoil."
Kaveh turns to Al-Haitham then, and part of him visibly softens at the sight. "Well, maybe part of it is love," he concedes. "I'm in love with you, Al-Haitham, did you know that?"
Al-Haitham, despite himself, smiles. It makes Kaveh's eyes widen. "I do know that, Kaveh. You told me a few nights ago, do you remember?"
"I think so."
"Good. Then you should remember that I told you to tell me that when you're sober, and maybe then I'll say it back."
Kaveh squints at him. "'Maybe?' What do you mean by 'maybe?' I have changed my mind. You are a bastard, and I am not in love with you."
There is no winning with Kaveh. But maybe, there is no losing either.

"You do not have nothing, Kaveh," Al-Haitham says roughly. "You may have buried yourself in your self-doubt, but you are relentless. You shine even when the moon takes governance of the sky."
Kaveh gapes at Al-Haitham. "So what I'm hearing," he says slowly, "is that you will not kick me out for the time being."
"What you're hearing is that I will wait for you," says Al-Haitham.
After all this time, Kaveh has yet to unpack his bags.

“The coughing. Sure.” Kaveh swallows, then keeps talking like he didn’t just exhibit such an obvious nervous tell. “So, you’re sick. Is that any reason to upend your life? I understand needing to take the time to get better, but—”
“I am not going to get better. I am going to get worse, and then I am going to die,” Alhaitham says plainly.

He has it on good authority that every time he smirks like this, Alhaitham will be more susceptible to agreeing to stupid challenges. He abuses it thoroughly. "Come on, Alhaitham. Are you telling me you really don't think you can handle whatever I throw at you?"
Alhaitham's eyes flash. Gotcha, Kaveh thinks gleefully. "Wipe that stupid look off your face. Of course I can handle whatever you throw at me."
