Summary
“If you cut his hair, he becomes a slave,” Meren corrected. “The Altarez say the body is the thing. Remove his crown and the prince is defiled.”
“Maybe then we’ll ransom you back to your court after all,” Baruna smiled. He pulled Ganzabara’s head higher to look in his horrified eyes. “Take the gold for your life and send you back to your men. What will they do when they see they’ve paid a royal price for a slave?”
“No,” Ganzabara whispered, stricken. “Please. Anything— not that."

Summary
They’re on that fucking hill for hours, and the rain doesn’t get heavier but it also doesn’t let up at all. It’s honestly pretty fucking miserable, just getting increasingly sodden, and there’s a fear that anyone trapped under debris could drown if they’re really fucking unlucky. They’re trying their best, but a disaster like this? Even under the best conditions, you can't save everyone. These are not the best conditions.

Summary
“What kind of toy was it?” Buck says, before he can stop himself. He doesn't want to push Eddie too far with this, but he simply must know.
Eddie bites his lip. “A strap-on.”
Buck, as he so often does when he imagines Eddie having sex, blacks out for a second.
He's not really sure what his reaction is, in the sense that he doesn't know what his face does, and he doesn't know what his feelings are. He feels a little like a TV tuned to a nonexistent channel— just fuzz and white noise.
Or: Buck and Eddie have a conversation about sex. Everything kind of spirals from there.

Summary
“Dad,” Chris called, and when there was no response he pushed it open. “Dad, you have to drive me to—”
His dad was there, still asleep, laying with most of his face smushed in his pillow and looking dead to the world. Also there, half-sitting up and tugging the covers up to his neck, was Buck.
“—school,” Chris finished, looking at Buck. Buck looked back, his eyes wide and frantic. For a couple of seconds they both just looked at each other.
“Hi, Buck,” he said. “Um.”
“Heeey, Chris,” Buck said. His voice cracked a little on the hey, which would probably have been funny under any other circumstance.

Summary
“I don’t know why you’re calling me Buck,” says the second Buck. “But you can handle me any time you want, hotass.”
He drags his eyes up Eddie’s body, shameless, slow. When he meets Eddie’s eyes, he grins with a kind of calculated flirtatiousness.
Eddie clears his throat. “Are you not Buck? Evan Buckley?”
“Yeah, that’s me. Evan. We know each other?” He bites his lip, still smiling, and Eddie huffs a laugh that comes out strange, shy and breathless.
Healing and love and good things coming down the road.

Summary
“Is that one of Dad’s shirts?” Adriana asked him, because it sure as hell looked like one of Dad’s shirts, and because Eddie hadn’t ever buttoned his shirts to the neck (except on his wedding day) since he was about fifteen.
“No,” Eddie said, into his knees. They were both quiet, then, listening to the rustle of the wind against the bushes around them. It was the first one-on-one conversation they’d had since he came back to El Paso, and it was pretty pathetic.

Summary
“I thought you were ready to start dating,” Bobby says, which. Eddie doesn’t think that’s remotely close to the point.
“Yeah, Eddie,” Buck echoes, all narrowed eyes and petulance, aggressively attempting to spear a tomato on his plate while maintaining eye contact.
“I…I don’t think the blind dates were really working out.”
“So you’re trying to get out of your aunt’s setups, again. And this is what you’re going with?” Hen says, eyebrows raised.
“I did not say that. I hadn’t even thought about telling Pepa I’m seeing Felisa, to be honest.” But isn’t that a thought. “I just thought a break would be nice, you know? I can find someone at my own pace, organically.”
A chorus of protests and objections, to the tune of “how are you going to meet someone organically when everybody thinks you’re dating someone else”, breaks out across the table.
“Oh, he’s gonna find someone organically, alright,” Chimney interrupts. “Obviously, he’s gonna fall in love with Felisa.”
Buck promptly begins to choke on his salad.
Or: Eddie pretends to date Felisa Valdez, a normal thing to do, for normal reasons. Buck acts normal about it.

Summary
Eddie’s never had someone like Buck before. He’s never felt like this around anyone else, too, like his body knows he’s safe before his mind does. There are the things that are muscle memory: shoulder bumps and taps on the arm, the way Eddie keeps looking over his shoulder and being surprised that Buck is right there. Buck fills up all the empty spaces in Eddie’s life, if not his memories.
Eddie wakes up in Texas, missing eight years of his memory. He doesn't think anything is different until his best friend from Los Angeles shows up.

“And then he basically accused me of being in love with you, which was so ridiculous that I kicked him out,” Buck finally says, out of breath and flushed with terror. “Which was the right move, because that was crazy, right? Doesn’t that sound crazy?”
“What? Why?” Eddie asks over speakerphone, sounding not even a little horrified by the suggestion and in fact, more distracted than anything. “Wait, sorry, give me one second, I need to watch the recipe video.

Summary
Buck keeps him everywhere. He’s smuggling him into every inch left vacant, because like this, he doesn’t lose him, won’t lose him. Like this, he gets to keep Eddie forever, even if it’s just the pieces and the memories attached. The reminder of him will haunt him and this apartment like a ghost. Because Buck can’t trap him in his apartment and force him to stay, he’d never ask that, couldn’t ask that, but he’s going to damn well do his best to salvage it in some form. He’s kidnapping Eddie’s shadow, no matter how much it hurts, and there’s no choice about it.
Eddie announces he’s leaving. Buck, naturally, begins a slow descent to madness.
[ALT. summary: Buck has resolved to be the greatest friend ever. He’s handling this move so well. And not at all being abnormal about Eddie’s house. Or Eddie’s belongings. Or, well. Eddie.]

Summary
It unravels, somewhere between a strawberry milkshake and a burger that drips grease onto the Formica table, when Christopher says:
“I have to go to church on Wednesday.”
Eddie pauses with a fry halfway to his mouth and dripping in ketchup, and glances over the table at him. “On Wednesday?” he repeats. “For what?”
Chris shrugs one shoulder. “There’s a-a healing service.”
Eddie slowly sets the fry back down on his tray as Christopher takes a bite of his burger. “Healing service,” Eddie says. He’s trying not to jump to conclusions— really, he is, both because he wants to give his parents the benefit of the doubt and because if this is going where he thinks it’s going, he might actually lose his mind.
“Yeah,” Christopher says. “It might be a good idea.”

Eddie is cursed.

“My, uh. My dad’s had a heart attack,” he says, sort of like it hasn’t sunk in yet, “He’s still in the hospital, it was. It was pretty bad, I think.”
“I’m sorry, Buck,” says Chris, “Is he going to be okay?”
“I don’t know,” says Buck, “She wasn't. It wasn’t clear, it was, she was. She wants me to go.”
“Do you want to?” Eddie asks, quiet, and Buck’s eyes snap back to him.
“Eddie,” he says, wretched, “She wants me to help. She wants me. She wants me.”
