Mike slid the cups across the counter, careful with the vanilla one. When the boy took it, he did so like it was fragile, like he didn’t trust himself not to drop it.
“Thanks,” The boy murmured. Their fingers brushed.
The boy froze.
Mike’s brain bluescreened. “Oh—sorry,” The boy said quickly, pulling his hand back, cheeks pink. “I didn’t mean to—”
“No! It’s—fine,” Mike said, mortified. “I mean. Totally fine.” Max made a noise that sounded suspiciously like she was choking back laughter. “Names? You people seem somewhat interesting, at least, more than our normal customers.” she asked.
“Dustin,” Baseball Cap said immediately. “Henderson. With an H. People forget the H.” “No one calls you Dustin Enderson. I'm Lucas.” Curly Hair told them. “Jane.” The girl said, focused on her ice cream.
The last boy hesitated. “Will. Will Byers.”
Mike wrote it down in his head like a permanent fixture.

Will Byers is an asshole. He never takes off his headphones, thinks that he's above everyone just because he reads stupid poetry nobody gives a shit about. That pisses Mike off. Summary
“Mike, I know a lot about you. I care a lot about you. Sometimes, it’s like- I-I can feel what you’re feeling too,” Will’s voice quivers, his lip trembles, “But I need you to talk to me, because sometimes I can’t tell what you’re feeling, and I want you to talk to me.”
Mike wants to unfold himself to Will. He knows he does. He is certain of it.
He looks up at Will, who stares back at him, almost hopeful now. It will hurt even more to let him down, to crush those beautifully keen, eager, kind eyes, to reduce them to sunken out hollows.
Mike feels sick. He chokes out the words, consoling himself with the fact he’s doing what’s best for everyone, especially himself.
“I can’t Will. I want to, but I’m sorry, I can’t.”
Will’s face plummets.
Mike’s being compassionate. He can’t love Will exactly how he deserves. He can’t force Will to stay when he eventually leaves. He’s being gentle, taking the easy way out by letting him go now. It should hurt less. Maybe it will. Maybe it won’t.
OR
Mike and Will work through their trauma together, but other factors make it more complicated.

“Just um-” He raises his hands to rub them along the upper part of his arms. “There’s a song- A song in the movie, actually. I- it’s really good.”
A bemused grin settles over Mike’s lips as he listens. The sunlight is catching his hair again in that godly way that makes Will’s head spin.
“I can’t wait to hear it.” Mike says.
