Summary
She’s learned how to determine which particular cases Gant deems important. If it's a high priority, it goes to Manfred Von Karma. The next tier goes to Edgeworth, because even if he doesn’t have the same experience as Von Karma, it’s almost as likely that he’ll get a guilty verdict.
There’s rungs below that, each one having a prosecutor with a win rate corresponding to just how important Gant deems the trial. The ones Lana gets to assign almost always go to Payne, because they’re so non-priority that she can’t assign Edgeworth, and Gant has never in his life given a trial to Winston Payne.
It chips away at her soul, case by case, the knowledge that she has no role in the Prosecutor’s office other than for Gant to pull her strings.

Update:
So just wanted to provide an update on this for anyone who was waiting/if anyone's started reading this. Unfortunately I had to take some time away while I was writing this fic last year, and at this point it's just been too much time away and I've lost the muse. So, I'm sorry to say but there won't be a final chapter for this fic, and it's been tagged as discontinued.

She’s immensely thankful that she’s alone in her room right now, because if she wasn’t, she’d have to explain why she’s pacing like this, and she just doesn’t have a good answer for it.

Summary
At the start, it only happened once a week, if that.
Shepard’s always had nightmares, that’s nothing new. Ever since Akuze, she’s had nightmares in some shape or form, but Shepard thought those had tapered off, just a little bit. Not that trauma ever goes away completely, but in her experience it eventually isn’t at the forefront of your mind anymore.
In the back of it, sure, but not necessarily the thing that you think of every waking hour.
Since Saren - since the beacon on Eden Prime, really - they’ve been coming back bit by bit though. Not every night, but definitely at least once a week, maybe two or three times. Being with Liara in those months following Sovereign’s death brought them back down to the normal amount, even if that time of peace, relatively speaking, didn’t last very long.
Dying definitely fucks with your head though, and those memories provided more than enough nightmare fuel.

Nicole can’t help her smirk at that, because she’s pretty sure that that’s high praise given that Waverly’s chest is still rising and falling with exertion. She wants to be sure though, so she looks over at her girlfriend, doing her best to tamp down her grin.
“That’s a good ‘oh my god’, right? Not an ‘oh my god, I just remembered that time that Wynonna firebombed Nedley’s cruiser or something.’”
Waverly giggles at that and lightly slaps Nicole’s chest, but she still looks so happy, so it must have been a good ‘oh my god’, in Nicole’s mind.
