Aiden hated the crown. There was some degree of irony there, seeing as he served the crown with his life and sword. But there was a difference between the crown as a symbol of governance and the crown as an object killing his king.
“Take it off,” he hissed, fingers curling impatiently around his scabbard.
Ludwig was still looking down at the surface of the Lake, like his own reflection was giving him some kind of answer that no one else could. Which it probably was.
Aiden also hated the Lake.
The Lake of Truth was the kingdom’s only gift from the gods, the one connection they had to a power higher than themselves. And power always had a cost.

The thing about dreams was that when you were within them, there was no difference between wanting to do something and doing it. If normal thoughts had to pass through several steps in order to be turned into actions, dream-thoughts had maybe one wishy-washy barrier to cross. Maybe.
So when Ludwig saw Aiden standing in the doorway of his bedroom, there was no pause like there would’ve been in real life, no moment when he dug his heels into the carpet and held himself back.
There was just desire.
