Summary
If there is one thing Buck will always do, it is help people. Doesn't matter what sort of danger it puts him in, or who the person is, he will jump in feet first and get the job done. When he's alone in a parking lot late one evening, of course he's going to run towards the woman yelling that her father is having a heart attack. Why wouldn't he?
When he doesn't show up for his shift the next morning, Eddie and the rest of the 118 immediately know something is very, very wrong. But this time, there's not much they can do about it. There's no ladders to climb, no debris to move. Buck just isn't where he's supposed to be.

Summary
Buck left a voicemail before everything went wrong.
Eddie listened to it hundreds of times—until it wasn’t a message anymore, but a lifeline.
The fire should’ve taken him. It didn’t.
What did was worse: the silence afterward, the not-knowing, the almosts, the “I love you” that came too late.
Weeks pass. Buck is gone. Presumed dead.
But Eddie can still hear his voice.
And Eddie’s always been good at following voices through the dark.Bookmarked by illyria13

Summary
He was going to watch her find the two seconds of nothingness.
And he was going to want it. He was going to need it.
He was tired of fighting. He was so unbelievably tired of being strong, of being good, of taking the punishment and hoping that someone, someday, would decide he was worthy of forgiveness, of love.
Bobby didn't want him back at the 118. Eddie wouldn't look at him. His parents had never loved him.
I wish I could say I feel nothing, Buck thought, a tear finally slipping through his fingers and dropping onto his jeans. But I feel everything.
He sat in the darkness of the loft, listening to the shower run, waiting for the ticking clock to strike zero.
He was going to relapse tonight. He had already made the choice. Now, it was just a matter of waiting for the moment to arrive.
Or,
Buck has been sober for six years, during the lawsuit, Buck relapses.
