Tony's not here to save anyone, he's just got an interminable case of curiosity that would probably get him killed one day if it weren't for the curse that'll actually do the killing.
Stephen doesn't need saving, but if he did he could save himself. Tony finds a way to save him regardless. Tony does need saving, but there's nothing he or anyone can do to save him. Stephen's not prepared to accept that.
