Because he whispers into Lance’s hair, tell me about your family, and Lance starts talking again, and he feels that boulder of utter anguish trying to kill him. And maybe Lance doesn’t notice or does but doesn’t mention it or Matt has gotten really good at this pretending thing all of a sudden, but while Lance talks about something his older brother did, Matt mourns the loss of his life again. It doesn’t help when he realizes they’ve technically never met, Matt’s just met his ghost. How did he manage to fall in love with a ghost?

"Like a mermaid, but just a boy," you explained. "He looked my age. And he had all these shells, but dropped them when he went back in the water." You opened your fist to show him all of the seashells tucked inside. Then you showed him the green piece of sea glass. "His hair was this exact color."
"How could someone's hair be green?" He questioned, one eyebrow higher than the other.
"Merpeople hair can be all kinds of colors," you said matter-of-factly.
