“I am guessing you have another invitation,” Viktor says softly. Jayce’s non-answer of shrugging his shoulders is enough of a confirmation for Viktor to continue. “The flowers did not work? Or the strongly worded letters?”
“Not even Mel is working with me on this. She says I have to go,” Jayce spits, “like I — like I’m expected to recite all our research on a coin flip. As if anyone there besides her will even understand it.”
He hides his eyes behind the cup of his hands, though Viktor knows he’s still staring down at their scattered notes for a distraction. Between vellum and coffee-stained sheafs of schematics is a familiar, albeit more elaborately decorated, square of near-black cardstock. Its gold filigree glitters in the frosted light coming in from the windows, yet it brings no warmth. No glee. No self-satisfaction at having caught it too late.
Viktor slides it out from between their notes with two fingers, leaving it on the tabletop for the both of them to read. Jayce’s name is prominent in thin, blocky text — another invitation, another offer for his time in exchange for a few hours of pretend in front of a flock that’s already made up its mind.

The room went quieter than the faintest whisper, more stunned than a stolen breath.
“...Come again?” Ambessa asked, her voice severe.

Or, the one where Prince Viktor, the adopted son and political prisoner of the Medarda Clan reunites with the boy he made a Knight: the venerable Sir Jayce Talis. The Prince seeks freedom. And the Knight seeks revenge. Viktor is wearing dark lensed safety goggles, so he’s able to recognize the face immediately. The man shifts his giant hammer in his gloved hands and scans the lab with a serious expression. When his gaze lands on Viktor, his blue eyes go wide.

The blaster clicks and Jayce tenses but nothing happens and he makes the guess that the man has turned his blaster to stun.
“I’m not a Jedi.”
“But you-“
The man pushes him harder against the wall, “I'm not. No one is, the Jedi are extinct.”

Jayce is a Mandalorian who is drawn to investigate Kyber crystals. His work leads him to Viktor, a Jedi in hiding who is searching for Kyber crystals to teach his padawans and help aid his hidden sanctuary. They become unlikely allies. Together they help each other escape trouble and create a safe place to exist, free from the clutches of the Empire, all the while feeling unexplainably drawn to the each other.
The Force has a mysterious way of working.

It takes him a moment and another careful look to be certain, but—yes, it’s got a more subtle variation on the Academy staff bot uniform, white and muted browns, and the College of Sciences insignia pinned to the breast of its waistcoat, and where its shirtsleeves are rolled up to its elbows, Jayce can see the fine, thin lines running up its forearms, the divots in the synthskin showing where the metal plating must connect below.

Jayce searches for him through all timelines and possibilities, and tries to put the broken pieces of Viktor (and himself) back together.
He just didn't expect to wind up in the past and meet a younger Viktor before his apartment exploded, nor the events he would unwittingly set in motion.
"Goodnight, Jayce," Viktor breathes.
The last thing he knows is a gentle caress against his forehead. Cold. But tender, featherlight. Afraid.
And he bolts awake in the dark, only a mere few hours later, sweating in the cold of the night.

Summary
But Jayce doesn’t seem the type to want Viktor’s ire. Something about his expression, so open until now, is guarded — wounded. Viktor squares himself and makes a bold guess.
“You want to be good for me, then?”
The energy between them snaps taught as piano wire. Jayce looks at Viktor with open wonder, his mouth falling open. It’s as if he’s been seen for the first time, though now that he’s said it Viktor finds the idea laughably obvious. A man who sought out someone whose life he could improve doesn’t do that for nothing. Viktor is so relieved to find something self-serving under Jayce’s idealism.
“I would,” Jayce says, his voice a strained whisper.
